Title: Santander Cards UK (formally GE Money/GE Capital)
Post by SuzyQ on Jul 10th, 2009 at 5:19pm
Has anyone tried to find the 'normal' phone number for Santander Cards based in Liverpool?  I have just taken out a card with them because the store was offering an extra discount.  Now to contact them I have to use 0871 522 5272.  All the databases I have accessed do not recognise this number.
Does anyone have he information? :-*

What store's card does this 0871 number relate to?

This number is listed in the database numerous times under GE Money and GE Capital.

GE sold these businesses to Santander in January this year:

GE Money Credit Card

On 7th January 2009 GE Capital Bank Limited, which provides GE Money credit cards as well as store finance and auto business, was acquired by Banco Santander SA. As a result GE Capital Bank Limited will be part of the Santander group. This will not affect your account, so please continue to deal with us in exactly the same way.

Santander is one of the ten largest banks in the world by market capitalisation with 65 million customers worldwide. In the UK, Santander owns Abbey, Alliance and Leicester and Bradford & Bingley's retail deposit business. GE Money's credit cards, storecard and auto finance business complement Santander's existing Cards and Consumer Finance businesses.

GE Money Mortgages & Secured Loans are still managed by GE Money and are not included in the acquisition.

I used 020 8181 0000 a few days ago, to contact GE.  Answered as Santander cards.  You have to enter your card number and it then personalised the menus for the particular card I was enquiring about (Asda) but the customer service representative I ended up speaking to was quite happy to also deal with a different brand of card I held with them, on the same call.

Santander has recently acquired GE Capital Bank Ltd who provided your GE Money Card.
GE Capital Bank Ltd has changed its name to Santander Cards UK Limited, and so your Credit Card is changing its name to Santander MasterCard.

I am changing the names in the database to reflect this.

Thanks to Irrelevant for the phone number 020 8181 000.  I have used it today for my Laura Ashley card and it worked a treat.

Also my thanks to other replies providing the information about Banco Santander taking over GE Capital's card services

Thanks for the feedback. I have amended entries for what are now Santander Cards UK. The alternative 020 8181 0000 is given as an international alternative for on some brands' websites.

The 0113 2807080 number is only open at certain times, and is therefore closed at times when the 020 number is open. For this reason, I have put the 020 as the main number and 0113 as a secondary alternative for all cards operated by Santander Cards UK.

Please Note, as I've mentioned on many occasions in the past, from 1st hand experience of having worked there, and unless it has all been changed around, the 020 8181 0000 number diverts to the call centres in Leeds, the 0113 2807080.

Consequently you've possibly got it all bASS ackwards and the entries should show the 0113 first and Also the 020 8 in the additional info !!  ::)

DaveM, thanks for your input. I had, of course, given consideration to publishing the 0113 (Leeds) number as the primary number as they are based in Leeds, rather than the 020 (London) one.

However, the 0113 280 7080 number is only answered 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, as the lady who answers it at all other times points out.

I've just called the 020 8181 0000 number as well. For a number which diverts to the above 0113 number, it answers completely differently.  ::)

Callers can press 1 to report a card as lost or stolen, or hold to be told that opening hours are 8am to 9pm, Monday to Sunday. I tried this number on Sunday daytime and found that it requested a card number, yet the 0113 number was closed.

Furthermore, the 020 number is given as an international alternative for the 0871 numbers. It surely stands to reason that any number published for customer contact is likely to remain operational for that purpose and therefore be a better alternative than an unofficial one.

So all in all I'm puzzled as to why you think we should publish the 0113 number as the main number, causing customers to call it, only to find that they have to call the 020 number because the former is closed.  :-?

No, that's fair enough.
As I said above . . . "unless it has all been changed around" . . . , it obviously seems they've altered the system sufficiently to warrant your decision. I did say that you'd possibly got it wrong, but on reviewing the info, I agree that the way you've done it is the correct way to go.
