Straight from the horse's mouth
"new per minute call rates to non-geographics numbers From 2 September calls to 0500, 0845, 0870, 0844 and 0871 numbers will be charged at 40p per minute. Calls to 0800 numbers will be charged at 25p per minute." http://www1.orange.co.uk/septemberchanges/ since you ask. |

Don't you just love the manipulation of the English language here? The charges aren't being increased, being raised, going up or increasing, they'll "be charged at"'!

Title: Orange PAYG increasing cost of calls to 08 numbers Post by oldharryrocks on Jul 27th, 2009 at 11:53pm

http://www1.orange.co.uk/septemberchanges/ Orange are also contacting contract customers and saying that from the 12/9/09 they are increasing the minimum charge for calls not included in your plan (i.e. 08 numbers, and calls made after you used up inclusive minutes) They go up from 5p to 15p a minute. |

We now have the first test for the Ofcom regulations that will come into effect on 1 August.
See here - http://www.ofcom.org.uk/media/news/2009/04/nr_20090423. 03 numbers (although non-geographic) are excluded from the list published by Orange. I believe it to be Ofcom's intention that from 1 August, calls to 0870 should be charged in the same way as calls to 03 and that any departure from this principle should be clearly highlighted in all pricing information. Legal eagles may wish to study all of the material published by Orange (for effect beyond 1 August) and the detailed specifications found around page 165 of this document for evidence of a breach of the General Conditions. |

With apologies to more expert motorists, may I suggests that this is more an emergency stop, with many consumers being mown down before it came to a halt, than a U-turn. The U-turn would be achieved if Orange announced that it would be reducing the cost of calling the remaining 0870 numbers to equal that of ordinary landline numbers. The casualties are those who have abandoned the benefits of contract loyalty they have earned, for what is now seen to be no good reason. In absence of further information, one must ask if this move relates only to contract customers, whilst the announced increases for PAYG customers are going ahead. |
