Heinz has already replied to your charge question on the almost identical thread you posted on the requests forum here.
But basically, charges for 0871 0872 0844 0843 and 0842 are set by the person called, but they DO have to let the telcos know in advance, so they can set up their systems. Nobody gives calls to any of these away for free. Some providers, TalkTalk included, are however now letting you call 0845 and 0870 ONLY within your inclusive calls allowance. |

Absolute rubbish !!! ::) :o That's like going to the supermarket picking an item up off the shelf with no price label on, and when you question this, being told that you will only find out when you get to the checkout because the manufacturer of that product hasn't decided on the price. I do wonder what is happening today when people are allowed to work for an organisation but either do not possess the knowledge and common sense to work there and/or are not adequately trained. Talk Talk provides a pricing booklet online in PDF which gives all call prices and charges for other services. Just go to ]www.talktalk.co.uk/pricing 0843, 0844, 0871, 0872 and 09xx number ranges are generally charged from landlines at different rates depending on the next few digits. This is the case with Talk Talk and as far as I know its prices are the same as BT's, although it's best to check. You need to find out what charge band the relevant number is in by refering to this page on the BT Price List. The bands are the same and you can then cross-reference this with the price booklet I linked to from Talk Talk. These are the lengths telephone companies go to to make it difficult or nigh-on impossible to find out how much it actually costs. For example, refering to the BT link, numbers starting 0871 71 are g7. Referring to page 10 of the Talk Talk booklet shows that g7 is 9.79 pence per minute at all times. |

I won't say "rubbish", but it is actually much worse. At the supermarket checkout you can ask the price and then decide not to buy the item. In this case they are asking for an unconditional commitment to buy the item at whatever price they later chose to charge you. I have met this situation before with mobiles, when the charge depends on the network on which the called phone is terminated. Because numbers can be ported, there is no immediate way of knowing the charge simply from the number. The enquiries department of your provider apparently does not have access to the relevant information to tell you which network a particular number is on. They suggest ringing the person to ask them - ;D |

>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thanks for your reply I forgot to mention I am in Southern Ireland so its TalkTalk Ireland Euroland :) website www.talktalk.ie I am on Talk Tariff 3 so I get unlimited Free Calls to landlines however Yes they say they do NOT know the price of the 0871 or 0870 Non Geographic Numbers based in the United Kingdom They DO suggest you actually call the company to find out this is sharp practise TalkTalk Ireland advised me that 0871 were rated at 0:00 Euros by Email I asked them by e-mail what 0870 numbers in the UK were they when silent on that one to cut a long story short I ended up with a large bill for 30 Euros or £26:50 sterling the rate for 0870 to 38 cents peaks and 25 cents off peak Strange but Tele2 the Switz Discounter only charge 10 cents per minute flat rate all the time to UK 0870 numbers. Thanks, HHeidy |

Any company should be able to tell you how much a service/product costs before you decide to purchase. I'm also surprised that as Ideal World TV is available in Ireland that it does not have a number for viewers in that country. The 0871 number is a way of the TV station charging for calls to it. As you've found out with 0870, an international call to one of these numbers can be far more expensive than if called nationally from within the UK. 0845 and 0870 number call rates vary between providers with some allowing them in inclusive packages. 0843, 0844, 0871 and 0872 are generally the same across all landline providers. 0871 and 0872 are up to 10 pence per minute at all times, that's lower than 09 premium rate numbers. 0844 and 0843 are even lower at up to 5 pence per minute at all times. If you need to call UK 0845 and 0870 numbers, then 18185 is useful. It is accessible through a geographical London (020) number and when you register, you enter the telephone number(s) you will be using the service from. I am assuming here, that it will allow non-UK numbers to be registered. The page for call rates through the 020 access number is here. 18185 is operated by a Swiss company, Finarea, and it also operates a similar service in Ireland, Call13434. Depending on how often you call these numbers and the exchange rate, you might find it useful to register with one or both these services. A useful site listing alternatives for 1890 and 0818 numbers in Ireland is ]www.saynoto1890.com |

I presume anyone near the Northern Ireland border with Freeview or anyone with a Sky dish could still get the UK oriented Ideal World shopping channel as its not an encrypted UK customer specific channel on Sky. I expect if people from Ireland call Ideal World that being the kind of company it is then it does not object to the extra business......... |
