Title: Strange text messages
Post by Gazza on Aug 28th, 2009 at 10:38am
Hi to all,

Firstly can i say thank you to everyone for such a very helpful website?

Secondly, i don't know if this is in the right place, but it is regarding some strange messages i am getting on home landline phone. Recently i am getting some text messages when i answer the phone, and the automated message i get says that i have a text message, and when i listen it just says the message is blank.

Recently i had i think four of them on the number 07953 966066, then a couple on 07722 182917. Then i got another message a few minutes later saying that if i want to stop these messages i have to phone 01795 3966 (i missed hearing the last number said)

Does anyone have an idea what these are about please?

Many thanks.

Looking at this site it appears that there is some persistent misuse of a telephone network or service going on here, in that people are being caused unnecessary inconvenience, annoyance or anxiety.

This should therefore be matter for Ofcom to deal with, using its powers under sections 128-131. There is no on-line complaints procedure to deal with such cases, so it is probably best to contact Ofcom directly.

Assuming that this line is with BT, then SMS text messages can be sent to it. The simplest answer is to turn off this feature, so that people can't text your landline, by calling 0800 587 5252.  ;)

My phone line is with Virgin Media, and i will be investigating if the text feature can be turned off on my phone line.

Regards.

Gazza....

From the Virgin Media web site http://www.virginmedia.com/help/telephone/virgin-media-text.php

Opting out of receiving texts

Dial 0800 587 5252 from the phone you wish to ‘opt’ out and choose option 1

I'm not familiar with Virgin Media's service. A quick search reveals this page on using a landline for SMS texting:

http://www.virginmedia.com/help/telephone/virgin-media-text.php

Also, VM Phone Guide booklet:

http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/pdf/phone-user-guides/main-guide.pdf

These say that the 0800 587 5252 number from a VM line to turn off the service, just as you would from a BT one.  ;)

07953966066 is the T-Mobile or one of the companies piggy backing on it EG Virgin Mobiles Text to Speech delivery service.Used if you have not got a landline phone that accepts texts. Its  the number you call to pick up the message, but more important, it is the number you call to control  SMSs arriving at your landline phone from the T-Mobile Network. By calling this number (and it has to be from the phone you wish to limit) you can set curfew hours or even set the system to never send SMSs to you.

Texts sent to landlines from O2,Vodafone,Orange and 3 mobiles are delivered by BT's service.

Hi,

I have used the information as supplied by Sherbert, and the option i had to choose was 5 for stopping all texts. Because the other options (1 to 4) were for something about curfew choices. And it did surprise me as well, because it was a BT service, that was enabling them to be sent to me.

I must thank you all for the excellent help and quick responses to my questions. As this problem has been bugging me for some months now, and i thought that i would never get rid of it.
