Title: Unknown number - 0800 612 6878 ("GMC Worldwide") Post by philhooz on Oct 14th, 2009 at 7:28pm
Can someone help me find out who this number belongs to..it was sent on a yellow postcard type of letter with GMC worldwide written on one side. On the other side, it said PLEASE TELEPHONE US URGENTLY, with the number 0800 612 6878. Thanks

Google doesn't return anything for that number, but it's a freephone number, so it's free for you to call (if you're calling from a mobile, you can use 020 0222 0700 and then enter the number at the prompt - then it'll be either inclusive or charged at geographic rate).

I would avoid doing anything with this. I won't even be calling the 0800 number, even though it's free. What connection do you have with the company sending it? Answer is you don't, you've never heard of them.
Sounds like a scam to me. Who is to say they won't record all the telephone numbers that call it and then use the list of numbers for junk calls? If the post card has been addressed personally to someone who lives at your address, then they have your/their name and address. If you call this number, they then have your telephone number. Let's say that they ring you at some point in the future, knowing you are one of the people on their list of individuals who have been sent a post card and try and fish more information from you. Personally, I would put the card in a safe place, noting when it was received, and do nothing else. That way you have it should anything happen in the future. |

Thank you for that advice Dave, will take heed and not even bother calling the number.

Calling now on a Saturday morning a clearly UK based person says they are GCM and only open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
I suppose you could always call to find out what they want but be careful about not handing over any sensitive personal data that you think could be in any way misused. Also withhold your number by dialling 141 before the 0800 number when you call them. I can only assume that GCM stands for some longer name they are also known by and that this is why Google finds nothing for GCM itself. I expect in all probability they are selling something and are tying to get round TPS Silent Call rules since there is no law stopping people putting unaddressed cards with 0800 numbers on through letterboxes and you voluntarily calling the number shown. |

In actual fact the op said it was GMC worldwide. (Not GCM) Googling GMC Worldwide comes up with... http://www.gmcwd.com/ |

Calling the number a few minutes ago receives a simple answerphone message, as if from a small business.
It announces the name as GCM and asks for a message with a consignment number. This gives the impression that it is a local courier company with a package to deliver. It could be G C M Distribution Ltd. of Dunstable. It could of course be some terrible scam! |

If it is a courier company then they are to be commended for using an 0800 number and not an 0844 or 0845 or 0871 number as now tends to be common practice in that industry.

Is this a scam company that asks you to pay a delivery fee so they can deliver a package but no package ever turns up?
Something like that was featured on Watchdog a few weeks ago... * Rampant supposition and guesswork - may be completely wrong. * |

They rang me back this morning (number withheld shown) asking why I had called their number at the weekend. I explained about a forum post on a website to someone they had put a card through the letterbox of. When I asked if they were a courier company they said they were.
But it could still be a scam of the kind catj mentions as I have never come across a legitimate courier company that uses an 0800 number or puts cards though a door if they cannot deliver that do not also make mention of a specific consignment number requiring delivery. |

I have received one of these today. The fact that it has a stamp and addressed to 'the occupier' would suggest that it is not a legitimate courier company. Mine will be going into the bin, but surely this is something that the royal mail could be routing out and refusing to deliver!?!?

This is Grosvenor Credit Managment registered at Purley Way, Croydon.
I would suggest there is no package waiting for anyone who calls them |
