Title: Accident Investigation Bureau - WARNING
Post by Barbara on Mar 10th, 2010 at 2:59pm
I cannot find any previous thread in the site relating to the above so felt I should post this warning.  A little while ago, I had a call from a man with a very strong Indian/Pakistani accident claiming to represent the Accident Investigation Bureau, his English was very poor but he said somone on our telephone number had had an accident in the last two years and he wanted to speak to them; I pointed out that they hadn't, he became quite aggressive "look, someone on that number has had an accident in the last two years PASS ME OVER TO THEM NOW".  I told him not to take that tone with me and hung up on him.  We are on TPS.  A little research has shown lengthy threads on this bunch on both moneysavingexpert & mumsnet, all have exactly the same experience - man with Indian/Pakistani accent, gives an English name if pressed, in one case on mumsnet, the receipient of the call was given a random private number as AIBs & the poor householder then had to change their telephone number as they had so many calls from angry people who had been called by AIB. Many others on both sites were either TPS, ex-directory or both. Apparently, the AIB staff regularly become aggressive/abusive.   I did find a company on Google called Accident Investigation Bureau run by an Edward Hamilton-Smith tel 01623 657853 but when I tried this number it was unobtainable.  Suffolk Police have also issued a warning about this bunch as bogus callers.   I just thought other forum members should be aware.

I am now going to try & report them re TPS for all the good it will do me.

TPS maintains a list of numbers which do not wish to receive marketing calls, but from what you describe, I do not believe this to be such a call. You havesaid that you have had only one call, so changing your telephone number is perhaps a bit premature.

This would seem to me to be an abusive or malicious call and should be reported to the appropriate body.

No Dave, I'm not changing my number, a poster on mumsnet had had to do that because AIB had given her home telephone number to others as AIB's contact number!  This is, apparently, a scam/bogus caller lot and most of the posts I read seem to link them with ambulance chasing (which would be sales/marketing) or some attempt to gain personal/financial details from the called party.  I was concerned to think that vulnerable people, particularly people who had had accidents, might be induced to provide private information.  I have now reported it to TPS &, after considerable difficulty, the ICO.  The fact that Suffolk Police also warn about them would indicate they are indeed malicious and certainly posters on the two sites I mentioned had received abuse from callers from AIB.

Had loads of calls like this but not as aggressive and the English is usually better. All come with international "unavailable" caller ID so TPS is irrelevant. Usually asked for by name and told about an accident at my address. They usually get the "I'll see if I can find him" technique and leave them dangling. Varied by speaking to them in gibberish Russian or occasionally asking them in very personal terms about the X rated services they offer.

Only remedy is one of the call vetting products but it's not enough of a nuisance (yet) to shell out.

I only had one call from India of the "we understand you were involved in an accident and are due to receive compensation for your loss and suffering kind."  More usually they pretend to be conducting market research "on behalf of FTSE 100 companies"  so that they can try to circumvent TPS registration and get agreement to vending my data to receive further such calls from endless other telephone sales operations.

The Information Commissioner is the body that eventually has powers to take action and can do so against an Indian call centre so long as it can be proved that it has been commissioned to work on behalf of a UK based organisation.
