Thanks. I have removed the entry for York but left Peterborough as it is.

I've just tried the numbers 01904 682100 and 01733 297600 and they are not NU but answer with the familiar female Jobcentre Plus voice saying that the number has now changed to 0845 604 3719.

By the end of April, the individual switchboards at Jobcentres up and down the country will have gone and replaced with the central one on the premium 0845 number. In many cases, other extensions at each Jobcentre can be reached by changing the last digit or two.

There are a number of other entries for Jobcentres and some have 0845 604 3719 listed and some 0845 606 0234. They are all pretty much interchangeable. You will have to search for jobcentre as the company name.

By the end of April 2010, the local switchboard numbers for all Jobcentres will have been discontinued. All calls will be directed to the new central switchboard whose number is 0845 604 3719. The number 020 8465 8604 presently goes through to the same place as the 0845 number and is therefore a suitable alternative for JobCentres in all areas.

It's up to you if you wish to follow the guidance below to find a direct number at your local Jobcentre. I suggest that if time is of the essence, then you might be better off using the 020 number.

Should the 020 number not work (be aware that it can be not recognised when they are closed), then please do post on this forum thread to let us know, so we can stop others wasting their time trying it. Alternatively, if you do use it sucessfully, then we would like to hear from you as well.

Guidance for finding an alternative directly to your Jobcentre

The best advice I can offer with regards contacting your local Jobcentre is that it may well have a group of sequential numbers, of which the 'old' published switchboard number is the first and that usually ends 00.

For example, the main number for Bexley Heath Jobcentre was 020 8218 4700 and this now has a recording redirecting to the 0845 number. The next number, 020 8218 4701, has been found to get through to that branch.

If you change the last digit from a 0 to a 1 and get no answer, or perhaps get through to a fax machine, then try 2, 3 and so on. Remember, these will probably go through to direct lines within the particular office they relate to and if someone does answer, he or she may refuse to put you through. In addition to the number being someone's direct line, it could be the phone in a room such as a meeting room or a fax machine.

Jobcentre Plus published a spreadsheet (available via WhatDoTheyKnow.com) which lists each branch, giving the date that each was due to change over to the main 0845 number. For those that hadn't done so at the time of its compilation, which is the majority, they have the old 01/02 number listed. Use this and change its last digit as I suggested above.

If you have any questions or require any help with this, then post here and someone will help you. Where you find a suitable alternative, then please post it here and I will see that it is added to the database for our visitors to use.

Hi, Thanks for the excellent advice. I tried the new centralised 0845 number but you do get to hold for a long while and as I'm not on BT and prefer to use up contract minutes I tried changing my original direct dial number for Hitchin Jobcentre Plus.
It was originally 01462 662500 until the switch over.
I changed last digit to a 1 and got a fax, I changed to 2 and got a fax, but changing to 3 got me straight through to the office.
Brilliant and well done
Ian :)

I have found the entry you have submitted to the database and verified it. I see that the spreadsheet I referred to in my advice, published by Jobcentre Plus, refers to this particular Jobcentre as "Letchworth", as too does the Direct.gov.uk website. I have therefore listed it as such.

You listed the number 0845 608 8583 alongside it, but the main number for Jobcentre Plus branches is 0845 604 3719. I have therefore replaced it with that. What is the 0845 number you supplied for?

The "old" number for Banbury is 01295 455000. The 01865 one is for Oxford branch. Can you clarify?

Title: Re: Jobcentre

Well this is the info from the directgov website:

Quote:
Banbury Jobcentre Plus
Crown Buildings
Southam Road
Banbury
Oxfordshire
United Kingdom
OX16 2EX
Telephone: 0845 604 3719
Textphone: 01865 445022
Jobcentre Plus Office

Note the Textphone number. I see your point though, it is an Oxford number guess they must either route it or have ported it to the Banbury office. Easy enough to do. I called it the other day and did get through to someone that said 'Hello, Banbury Job centre...'. Not sure if it gets through to the same person as the 0845 number though, but it was the Banbury JS.

The geo number for Cannock is 01543 461265, it's still listed on the Job Centre web site and hasn't been changed to one of the 0845's yet.

However for Stratford-Upon-Avon that has and it only lists an 0845 not like for Banbury where it lists a normal geo number for the 'textphone'.

To find the number of a Job Centre go to http://los.direct.gov.uk/Default.aspx and enter a postcode.

Hi Lenny. Thanks again for this.

The Textphone number is one way in, as it were, but you can also find others on the Excel spreadsheet on WhatDoTheyKnow. This gives 01789 303830 for Stratford-upon-Avon and also says that the Cannock number was due to change to the 0845 one on 21 April, so perhaps worth trying that again; I think it will bite the dust soon.

I can confirm that the Seacroft, Leeds number has switched over the 0845 switchboard. Thanks to this thread I've found the new phone number to be: 0113 2148501.

Also, 0113 2148587 will put you through the top floor, for other things than just signing on.

Thanks for this thread! It saved me some pennies. :)

The list of numbers is contributed to by all visitors and not an elite few with special qualifications.

As you would like this number, then perhaps you could let us know what you've done so far. What information do you have (i.e. the address and old geographic number) and importantly, what have you done in an effort to seek out a number?  :-? :-?

Have you followed the suggestion I posted previously in reply #2?

To look for a number to contact the Derby branch, follow the tips I posted above. I would start by trying 01332 714301, 714302 and so on. Bear in mind that these will probably be direct numbers for members of staff. Others have reported equivalent numbers for other Jobcentres to be suitable alternatives.

Please report back how you get on, and chiefly, any alternative that you find so it can be added to the database for other visitors to use.

This suggests to me that this branch possibly operates 714300 to 714449 at least, so plenty of numbers for the requestor to try.

Hi everyone.

Having used the info here several times I have just joined this site so I could add a couple of numbers for the King's Lynn Jobcentre. Hope they are useful to someone.

Since I am unemployed at the moment, and money is very tight, I find it unforgivable that the DWP has elected to use 0845 numbers, and I have filed written complaints to that effect.

I have also sent letters to all Jobcentre/DWP offices with which I have to deal, stating that I will not call any chargeable, non-geographic number, (you can obtain pre-paid envelopes for these offices from your local jobcentre, so no stamp to buy either).

I have pasted the text of my 'standard letter' below, and I invite anyone who reads this post to use it if they so wish. All you need to do is to add your own personal details, (name, address and Nat Ins number for instance). This letter can be sent to the any user of such numbers, not just the jobcentre.

===

Dear Sir/Madam

Your ref:

NON-GEOGRAPHIC PHONE NUMBERS.

Following a study of recent phone bills it has come to my attention that calls made to non-geographic numbers are proving disproportionately expensive when compared, on a like-for-like basis with calls to standard numbers. Therefore, please be aware that from now on I will not make or return any calls which require me to use a chargeable non-geographic phone number.

This includes, but is not limited to numbers starting:

09      or      084      or      087

Therefore, with immediate effect, if you wish me to contact you by phone you MUST provide a geographic number, that is to say a number starting:

01      or      02

Alternatively, you are welcome to supply a ‘freephone’ number such as one starting:

0800.

Thank you for your attention.

Noooooooo!  :'(

The 03 non-geographic numbers are the solution that this campaign is delighted to see. They are charged at no more than a geographic call across all landline and mobile providers.

For organisations that wish to use a non-geographic number but not charge customers a premium to ring, then 03 is the way.

Oops!... sorry about that!   :-/

I have modified my post and changed the 03 to 09.

I was going to put in a bit about allowing calls to 03 numbers, but that just encourages these organisations to use non-geographic numbers which is really not necessary.

Post by TomEatan on Jun 4th, 2010 at 4:24pm
Hi,

I added a number:

Company Name: JobCentre Plus
0844 / 0845: 0845 604 3719
Freephone: 01642 398332

I meant to place the "Freephone" under: "01 / 02 / 03"

and add: "Other Information" as: James Cook (Middlesbrough)

I spent a few hours using the 0845 number until a nice lady on the switch board gave me the local number. I used the local and can confirm it works.

If an admin could edit my entry and confirm it, this would help people a lot :)

Regards,
Tom

Migration of Jobcentre Plus Telephone to a Single 0845 Telephone Number

Balfour Beatty Workplace (BBW) currently have a contract to deliver switchboard services for Jobcentre Plus. The vast majority of Jobcentre Plus offices have their calls answered by BBW staff, however, on the smaller sites; calls are still answered within the Jobcentre Plus office. To optimise service delivery these functions will be moved from DWP premises and centralised into the four BBW Service Centres in Watford, Cardiff, Glasgow and Blackpool, creating a virtual pool of operators to deal with customer calls. To minimise disruption to customer service, at the same time, we will introduce a single national jobcentre number for customer contact with jobcentres. This is an 0845  number, with a separate 0845 Welsh Language Line number for those customers who want to conduct their business in Welsh.

I had to visit my local jobcentre today and was given two 01 numbers, one for King's Lynn and the other for Downham Market jobcentre. I did not request these numbers, although the staff know that I refuse to use 0845 numbers. It seems that management at the KL jobcentre have instructed staff to give these numbers to existing claimants, although they still expect new claimants to be ripped off by the 0845 number. I could not discover the reason behind this change of plan and can only speculate that managers there are tired of having to respond to requests from the 0845 switchboards for them to call claimants back.

It just proves that this system does not work, (or maybe that if enough people take action, with the help of this site, we can force these organisations to end the use of 0845s.

I have verified the KL number for myself, but not the DM number, though I see no reason at all to doubt it.

King's Lynn  01553 734955

Downham Market  01366 363903

I can also offer two other numbers for King's Lynn:

01553 774961 (Ruth)

01553 734927 (Cathy Clark, service delivery manager).

Hope this help.

So I tried the number given above and got through to Balfour Beatty, I must say I wasn't too persistent but essentially it didn't work.

"Hallo Balfour Beatty?"
"Oh hi, I was hoping to get through to Jobcentre Plus"
"Yeah... I'll have to give you another number for that"
"as long as it doesn't start with 0845..."
"I'm afraid it does"
"Alright then no worries, bye."

Follow the guidance I have posted on this and report back here what you find. For starters, the 'old' number for Ashton-under-Lyne branch is 0161 253 2900.  ;)

Tried that one earlier. Unfortunately, you just get an automated message that gives the 0845 number.

Yes, but if you follow the link to the guidance I posted, it will probably help you find a working number. The 0161 253 2900 is posted purely as a starting point; I did not expect it to be a suitable alternative.

Sorry about that, I misinterpreted what you said. No worries now though, I went down to the centre and all is sorted.

I'll bear what you said in mind if I ever need to ring them again.

Hi,

I was just wondering if someone could please ,help me get through to the Job Center in Grays, Essex as my son has to get in touch with them but only has a mobile phone with him as he isn't at home. He does not get 08456 numbers on his call plan and cannot afford to be on hold for 15 mins etc.

I did try the first number given, which was 02380713866 but it has been discontinued.

Please can someone help me as i don't even know where to begin. I know that area code is 01375 if they even use local codes.

Thank you very much for any help given

Jay  :)

Sorry, cannot help with a phone number BUT I can tell you that all jobcentres have available prepaid envelopes, (obviously you have to go there to get them but you can usually get a few at a time). Even calling a JC direct can leave you on hold while bits of paper are pushed around, the staff usually being pretty hopeless as they drown in all their own paperwork!

I have taken to keeping ALL contact with the JC in writing so I can refer back to it when they make mistakes, (as they do). Also, if you put a standard paragraph in your letters saying that you refuse to call 0845 numbers it will eventually make them realise that this policy is generating more work for them.

Hope that is of some help to you.

Hi,

That was the original number before they decided to rip off i mean, change their number to 08456... I have done what you guys have suggested and i called 01375 815 003 and the lady said 'Hello, Grays jobcenter' to which i mumbled that i was sorry, i think i had the wrong number  ;) So i have given that number to my son and he is going to call them now. Hopefully they will help him without questioning him as to where he got the number from  ;D

Thank you for your reply, i'm new here but i will certainly be back again to read the boards fully!  :D

Best Wishes everyone,
Jay

Yes, sorry, in my last message i didn't make it clear to you, sorry about that.

I got the number you gave me, 01375 815 000, then i read through the posts where it says to change the last number until you find a line that was answered and the 01375 815 003 was the line the lady from the job center answered and my son has now got his things sorted out as he has managed to get through to them and not on an expensive line.

Thanks again and sorry for confusing you.

I would urge people to follow the earlier advice and VARY the last digits- if a particular extension gets loads of calls which appear not to have gone via the switchboard, then it is likely those extensions will be decommissioned. Worse still, JCP might wise up and either try to find a technical solution to stop calls direct to extensions, or rent different sets of numbers. Smaller offices will probably have a range of about 30 from the original geographic number, while larger ones will have a range of over 100, though not all will be in use. Also, of course, it places a lot of stress on the poor person or people who happen to have extension XXX3 on their desk if people just try the one extension!

The more difficult nut to crack is the Benefit Processing Centres. The same approach does not work so well because many extensions will go through to the sections where people actually work on the claims processing rather than the "call centre" areas where the 0845 calls direct people. If you get through to anyone chances are it will be the wrong benefit and you will be advised to call the 0845 number.

The whole sorry business would be easily avoided if they adopted 03 numbers of course but it seems they don't want to lose face and be proved wrong to have adopted 0845 in the first place.

Eagle House
St Stephen's Street

City of Bristol

I note that the St Stephen's Street office is based in Eagle House, and if you search the database for company name jobcentre a verified entry for this branch will come up in the listings.

Welcome to SAYNOTO0870.COM.

Go to the search page and enter jobcentre into the Company name box and press search. Then look down the listings or use your browser's Find facility to search for bromley

Alternatively, because the entry contains the word "Bromley", you could enter bromley into the Company name box and then look down the alphabetical listings until you get to Jobcentre Plus.  ;)

Hi,

I am sorry to bother you yet again but I have tried altering the original number as advised in the forums   0208 271 5000 to exchanging the last digit to 1/2/3/ etc but that didnt work and just redirected me to 0845 604 3719.  I tried on the search as advised but that redirects me back to my post and not to any lists so maybe I can go no further.

I am struggling with the search engine - perhaps I am doing something very wrong but cant seem to progress any further.

Thanks

GG

Thanks. Good to hear you've found it.

It is worth pointing out that the entries for Jobcentres will be found by searching for jobcentre , that is all one word. Putting a space in it will return nothing unless there are recently entered unverified entries that have been submitted that way.

I check every day or so and change any entries that have been submitted as "Job Centre" (with a space in) to be just "Jobcentre Plus".

0845 6060 324 is the 'job enquiries' number.

I quote from the Jobcentre booklet 'Our Service Standards' (DWP1018), page 7, 'When you phone us':

'We aim to answer phone calls within 30 seconds. Our staff will give you their name and the name of the office or section you have called.

We will ring you back if you are concerned about the cost of the call or if we can't answer your question straight away'

It seems to me that if you call this number from your mobile you can expect to pay for no more than the time it takes to give them you mobile number and tell then that you are concerned about the cost of the call and require them to call you back in accordance with their service standards.

If you do this, and they refuse to call you back, file a formal complain, (the form is in this same DWP1018 booklet). If you get nowhere with that, complain to your MP that they have not done what they have promised to do.

Good luck with it.

We haven't found an alternative for 0845 6060 234 which I believe is Jobseeker Direct or whatever it happens to be called at this moment in time.

I suggest that you find a number for your local Jobcentre and ring them about it. Look in our database to see if your branch is listed. Welcome to SAYNOTO0870.COM.

I'm not sure why you've posed the question I've highlighted.

Based on the text you've quoted, I presume that you have taken it from the Jobcentre Local Office Search at los.direct.gov.uk

If the social fund is based at that same address then we need to look for the numbers that go to that address.

At present there is no entry for St Helen's Jobcentre in our database. Therefore, follow the guidance I posted previously.  The starting point is the old main number for St Helens Jobcentre which is 01744 698000. Thus, I suggest that numbers are probably in the 6980xx range and possibly higher; i.e. 6981xx etc. The number of numbers they have is likely to depend largely on the number of staff they have at that location.

Let me know how you get on by posting back here. Once you have a suitable number that they will deal with calls on, post here and I will add it to the database for others to use.  :)

0845 6088538 = As im looking to apply for a budgeting loan / Social fund.

I have no idea whether any alternative at the Jobcentre in Gregson House will deal with your enquiry for social fund. There is only one way to find out, and that it to try!

The question is, where are calls to 0845 608 8548 answered?  :-?

If they are answered at Gregson House, then the suggestions I put may be of help in seeking out an alternative. If they are not based there, then you could ask to be put through.

I did suggest some 01744 numbers.  ::)

Like sherbert, I pointed you to the number 01744 698000, not because it is a suitable alternative, but because numbers in Gregson House are likely to follow on. That is 698001, 002 etc up to however many numbers they may have (could be tens or hundreds).

At each Jobcentre there was a switchboard operator who took calls on the main numbers. In the case of St Helen's, that was 698000. They decided to save some money by doing away with them, instead having one central switchboard for all Jobcentres, which is what 0845 604 3719 is.

Sadly, they chose to use a premium 0845 number, rather than a 03 number as it is DWP policy to use 0845 numbers.

toasteduk, you might also like to do a search for dwp and look down the results. There may be something in there that will help you.

There are no St Helen's numbers on that list, but there are others such as Liverpool ones.

It may be worth remembering that all jobcentres have phones available to the public which connect direct to the various 0845 destinations. If you live near to a jc or have to visit anyway, why not use the phone there and when they cannot help you, (which is almost always!), tell them you want them to call you back at home or on your mobile, (they state in their booklet that they will do this... see my previous post).

If, like me you do not live near a jc this is of no help of course. :(

Two new numbers for the Jobcentre 'Benefits Delivery Centre' (BDC) office in Basildon, which seems to now be handling all claims in the East of England following the closure of the Norwich BDC.

01268 633006 (I have not used the number but have no reason to doubt it)

01268 633061 (I have used, & can confirm that this number is correct for this office).  Incidentally, the names of two managers there are:  Tina Hill & Steve Ford.

These numbers were furnished to me by one of the 0845 call centres, (I used a phone at the jc to call it!), after I threatened to contact my MP if they continued to refuse to give me a direct number for the BDC.

You may like to note that telling most jc staff that you are going to your MP seems to make them suddenly become a lot more helpful!

Hello and welcome to SAYNOTO0870.COM.

I have joined your posting to the long thread running for Jobcentre numbers.

Every Jobcentre used to have its own switchboard/general enquiries number for which callers would be put through to whoever they required. Jobcentre Plus decided to centralise all the switchboards into one and they also took the opportunity to introduce a premium 0845 number.

I have written guidance on finding other numbers at each Jobcentre and I suggest you have a read of it. The 'old' switchboard number for Lancaster Jobcentre is 01524 302000, so this is your starting point; other direct dial numbers are likely to follow on.

When you have a suitable number, please post it here and I will add it to the listings.

Thanks Dave - I did check that thread but Lancaster's one of the one's not listed yet. The 01524 302000 just gives you a recorded message about the 0845 number. I'll see if I can wangle anything out of them when I'm next down there.

If you are referring to our listings, then you should be aware that numbers are listed when someone adds them. So the reason there is no entry for Lancaster Jobcentre is because no one has submitted one.

Of course the 01524 302000 number gives a recorded message because it is the old switchboard number for that office!

My suggestion was that, as you would like a number for Lancaster Jobcentre, you might like to go about looking for it and then share it with us for others to use. Hence the suggestion that you dial direct numbers until you find someone willing and able to deal with your call.

Welcome to the forum.

Thanks for this; I've added an entry for it in the listings.  :)

Please provide feedback on database entries that need attention by posting in the Requests section of the forum. By this I mean numbers that don't work (say why they don't work) and therefore need removing; unverifieds that do work and can therefore be verified; companies that have changed numbers (whether it be 01/02/03 or 08 numbers) etc.

The alternative numbers listings work best when users tell us of any necessary updates. It creates better quality (more accurate) listings and stops others wasting their time ringing non-working numbers and saves the nuisance of those receiving calls who cannot help.

Hi l have just tried to contact my JC but had to get through by using the 0845 no. as my JC/SS dept is in Wick Scotland.  After waiting to go through the blurb of answering machine l was put intouch with someone.  It took 2 min before l spoke to a person.  I complained and asked for a land line 01 no.  To be told they do not have one.  I asked to speak to a supervisor who said the same l asked to speak to the manager who is not in til next week.

When l asked again for a 01 no. told again they do not have any.  I said this is not true as before l retired l worked for an organisation who had 0845 no, and they are placed ontop of 01 no.  She informed me that if you ask whoever answers to phone you back they will.  I pointed out that to get through to a person in the 1st place can be anything up to 5 min.  but got no where.

So l phoned up my MP. His secretary said they have changed it to 0845 no.  so it would be free.  I pointed out that it is not free.  Some landline providers charge and if you are on a mobile it can cost between 25p -35p per min. Also pointed out that 0800 no from mobiles are charged.  She said she would look into it but l will not hold my breath.

Gena.

This happens a lot with the jc, but eventually you will find someone who drops their guard and gives you an 01 or 02 number.

I was in the same situation as you, so until I found an 01 number I confined all my contact with the jc to letters, (not emails). Obviously this is slower, but it also clogs up their system and makes them much more likely to give you an 01 number, (and they DO still have them).

The next time you visit your jc ask them for some pre-paid envelopes, - if they have none printed with their address they can give you unaddressed, pre paid envelopes, (Ref Nr T51SS).

I always place the following text at the end of any letter I send to the jc.

===

NON-GEOGRAPHIC PHONE NUMBERS.

Following a study of recent phone bills it has come to my attention that calls made to non-geographic numbers are proving disproportionately expensive when compared, on a like-for-like basis with calls to standard numbers. Therefore, please be aware that I will not make or return any calls which require me to use a chargeable non-geographic phone number. This includes, but is not limited to numbers starting: 09, 084 or 087

Therefore, with immediate effect, if you wish me to contact you by phone you MUST provide a geographic number, that is to say a number starting: 01 or 02. Alternatively, you are welcome to supply a ‘freephone’ number such as one starting: 0800 or 0808.

====

You do need to be persistent with this, but eventually you will get an 01 number, if only so they can stop you writing to them!

Good luck!

Thanks MacLee,  I am very persistent.  It is rediculous if you want to contact the Wick SS for anything you have to write to Inverness, which is 70 miles south of where l live for them to send it to Wick which is 70 miles north of us, hows that for being stupid.

I get free calls to them from my landline but l am not going to tell them that.  I just feel sorry for all the people who do not have landlines especialy the young people who  use mobiles and only gewt £50 per week to live on and are still expected to phone the SS/JC

I will be phoning the manager next week and writing to them.  I will also wite to my SMP and all the Mp's and SMP's that have emails as it is just copy and paste, without any stamps.  They have to reply to you.

Very clever idea, I don't think. The person who receives the letter has to pay extra for receiving a letter without a stamp, and if you are writing to your MP, that means he will be putting it on expenses, which means 'we' will end up paying for your letter. Not much thought has gone into that little wheeze. >:(

I think that your idea of always adding this statement is an excellent one!! :)  Well done!

You could also mention that an 03 number would be acceptable, I suggest, as 03 numbers cannot be charged at a higher rate than the 01/02 numbers by regulation.

Title: Re: Jobcentre Plus - 0845 604 3719
Post by Maclee on Aug 27th, 2010 at 12:28am
Thanks for the positive comments.

I prepared this statement before I knew about 03 numbers, and I was going to add 03 to the list, BUT they would then still only use it for their clueless call centres, and as most people want to talk to a jc, not to their contractor at the call centre, I saw no reason to assist them in diverting calls from the jc itself.

It would not be a problem if those at the call centres could ever do anything other than to take your number and promise a return call, (which often does not materialise!).

Please feel free to use what I have written and to modify it to your own needs.

I get sick of the jc trying to dictate to the people it is supposed to be serving... time for us to strike back!  Grrrr!  (Rant over... I'm fine now!!)  :)

Will add the message never heard of 03 numbers but will be guided by you.

Thanks also for the freephone  0800 0556688 which is free to some mobile users.  If JC/SS can do this for  First Contact New Claims why can they not do it for the other numbers!!!!!  Did try the number from my mobile taking off the 0 at the begining and it is free as l checked my balance before and after.

Also memtioned to my MP's secretary the NHS24 number.  but on the few occassions l have used NHS24 l have phoned up my GP's number which when out of hrs goes through to NHS24.  Just another tip.

Darra Singh.. Chief executive of jobcentreplus.. Level 6.. Caxton House.. Tothill St.. London.. SW1H 9NA..

Email: darra.singh@jobcentreplus.gsi.gov.uk

Please everyone, do all you can to spread this info across other threads and websites as the jc seem to go to great lengths to keep the identitiy of this person and the address of his ivory tower from the rest of us!

Take a look at this Word file:

Title: Starting points for jobcentre numbers
Post by Maclee on Oct 4th, 2010 at 1:07pm
There is plenty of advice here, and on other threads, about how to contact a jobcentre by changing the last digit(s) of the original number, (which often ended 00). However, to be able to do that you need the original number of course, which is not always available.

However, if you go to the BT website,

http://www.bt.com

In the lower right corner you will see a box headed 'Find a number', click on the tab that says 'business name', then enter jobcentre (NOT jobcentreplus), and the location and click 'search'. In most, if not all cases you will then have the 'starting point' number for each jobcentre. I have tried this with several, including Wrexham, and can confirm it works (at least it does at the time of writing!).

With luck this may save people some time and reduce the need of people to ask for starting point numbers.

Please feel free to disseminate this information in whatever way you think best as it is time to hit back against these rip-off numbers.

Hi there, thanks for the number but it didn't work. Tried all numbers from 1 to 9 but unfortunately each time a woman's voice said 'Sorry, this number is no longer available' and gave the new 0845 number. Keep up the good work though, loving this site!

Why did you give up so soon?  :-?

I would have thought that most Jobcentre offices will have many members of staff and therefore many direct dialling in numbers; certainly more than 9. So I would continue on, either trying one at a time, or jump to higher numbers, e.g. 40 something etc.

5305 answered and was reasonably helpful and NO issue or mention of calling the 0845 number.

Excellent suggestion for changing last few digits of the original geographical number to the jobcentre in question.

My additional suggestion would be to use different number endings each time you call so as not to bombard the same person directly and make the service realise we have found a way to swerve the 0845 number,

Thanks again for the suggestion of using different direct numbers.

Yes this worked for me  ;D with the Alfreton  Job Centre Plus their old number was 01773724700 so i just rang same number but swapped last 0 to a 1 and got through to an adviser , so any number around that number might work  ;)

just tried this number again but had to use a 2 at the end to get through so it still works

Thanks for the feedback. I've added a note to the Alfreton entry that 02 might work, or try swapping last couple of digits.

I'm not sure what you're trying, but I've just called 01978 316510 and 01978 316520 and got through to staff members and not the recording redirecting to the 0845 number. You need to dial 01978 3165 plus two other digits, and perhaps 3166 plus two digits will be for Jobcentre in Wrexham.

Today I had to phone the Ilford BDC Jobcentre Plus office as my incapacity benefit has been removed without any notice! Obviously the b*****ds have an 0845 number & I point blank refuse to phone them (or anyone else who uses them), so I trailed through these forums trying to find an alternative number that won't cost me to call. I ended up phoning Wandsworth & she was very understanding but told me that her hands have now been tied, she was no longer able to put me through to another branch... but what she did offer to do was contact them herself, then pass my number on to them (bless her), which she did.

Sadly my awful predicament is still far from solved right now  :'(

Welcome to SAYNOTO0870.COM.

Sorry to hear about your predicament. Perhaps you could contact your MP about the issue with your benefit. If you do, drop in the communication that you find it totally distasteful that the Department uses 0845 numbers.

The only other thing I can suggest is that the DWP's policy is that the call to initiate payments is a freephone number. As you're not in receipt of benefit (because they stopped it), then perhaps you could ring the appropriate 0800 number (assuming that there is one for this purpose - sorry, I'm not familiar with what numbers they use).

Afternoon Dave'n'All at SayNo *(the greatest website on the net haha!)  :)
I just had to come and tell you all this... Even tho Im a little reluctant to let you know 'which' jobcentre this happened at, I feel the need to share my experience with you all.

I followed (Dave) your advice with the adding new number at end of previous before-changed numbers, and found my local branch of JCP on 01424 42500 6 (After all the previous tries got me thru to the FAX machine.)
Iv been online, and on the phone, since 930am this morning trying to get thru to Income Support after receiving a letter from the DLA about changes to my benifit amounts... Needed them urgently, incase they tried to say I hadnt informed them, or I get overpaid or whateer other excuses they spring to mind... For love nor money could I get thru to anyone. That's even after coming on here...

In the end I 'randomly picked' on one of the numbers in the JCP DWP listings, and thought "To heck, why not." Never realised what might happen; but managed to get through to a really lovely person, who after me telling them my Postcode rang me with an 0845 number to get thru to my local JCP. One Id already found and decided against, Indeed Im with others on this site that refuse to ring the 0845s at all. If I cant find the number here, they dont get my call.
As it turns out, and this is apparently available to EVERY JCP OUT THERE,  :o the person kindly used THEIR phone,  put me on a three way call, rang the 0845 number for my local JCP,  :o then PUT ME on the phone thru to them...  ;) And apparently it will work, because HE rang me... something else they are all able to do. Maybe if more of us got onto them and asked for a call back, they'd find it was working against them rather than for them to have the 08 numbers, and may change them back again... :-?

One thing that really peevs me beyond the  >:( 'ripping-out-of-my-hair-and-tearing-my-limbs-off is the JCP staff that say that THEY ONLY have these numbers to use as well.   ::) You're not going to tell me that if they are running late for work, or are sick one day, that they are going to have to go thru the rigmarole of calling their 0845 number  :-? and waiting half hour for an answer at £1per minute.. cos I dont believe it. Not for a minute.. It really enrages me.  >:(

Thanks, I've listed that. I gather that there's a typo, and it should be 01424 452006 as that's the prefix other sources are giving.

I would have thought that if they are ringing in sick or notifying of impending late arrival, then they would ring their manager on his/her direct 01/02 number. When the staff say they have the 0845 numbers to ring themselves, they probably are referring to when they are making contact with other parts of the service in the course of their work.

The thing to remember is that there's different types of enquiry by different people. I do not believe that it would be right for the public to pile all calls to office managers on their 01/02 numbers.

That is not the point at issue; it is the use of 0845 numbers for "customer" facing services.

;D A young lady at the new claims department gave me the number for Huyton Benefit Delivery Centre, I can confirm it works as I had the pleasure of speaking to the "Dragon" on the other end. After 25 minutes of discussing how I came about the number and her displeasure of actually having to do something other than play solotaire and polish her nails, she put me on a 3 hour call back.

3 hours later I had still not received a call back so I decided to call Morag again, on this occasion I was told that I should really get my phone sorted out to enable me to call expensive numbers as she does not have time to deal with my issues because she is the Manager of Huyton BDC.

So here is the number please feel free to post it.

Organisations use different 08 numbers, sometimes for similar purposes. Thus one alternative can sometimes get round more than one 08 number.

Finding an alternative is often a case of suck it and see.

Jobcentre Plus branch numbers are mainly listed under their main 0845 604 3719 number.

If you go to the search page for the alternative numbers database, and type in jobcentre, a long list of numbers will be shown.

The top two entries give some suggestions. The first one gives an alternative to the central 0845 604 3719 number, and as this the published number for all Jobcentres, then they will be able to help you, just as if you'd called the 0845 number (but without the premium charge).

The second entry links back to a posting I made on this thread previously, in which I set out guidance to finding a working number at local Jobcentre branches.

I suggest you use the central number and get them to redirect you from there as that is how they like general calls to come in (rather than direct to branches).

Hello and welcome to SAYNOTO0870.COM.

I have joined your posting to the existing one on Jobcentre Plus.

The 0845 number is a central contact point for all Jobcentres across the country and I believe that an alternative for this is 020 8465 8604. This number is right at the top of our listings as it is a direct alternative.

Thanks for posting about this; I've removed this entry.

I found this number by trying all the old Jobcentre Plus numbers which are listed in a Excel Spreadsheet on FOI request site WhatDoTheyKnow. This was the number for Croydon.

Someone might like to go through them and see if any are still live and go through to the centrall cal centre, just as the 0845 number does. Perhaps two or more people could work together and share the work. The spreadsheet is divided into different tabs by area.

I went to the search page and entered catford into the company name field and amongst the unverified entries are these:

Jobcentre Plus             0845 604 3719       020 8172 4232             Rushey Green, Catford
Jobcentre Plus             0845 604 3719       020 8172 4057             LEWISHAM (Rushey Green, Catford SE6 4AW) JobCentre Plus. NB: comes under Nine Elms Lane SW95 9BT address

Please let us know what you try and how you get on. If you find a working number I will list it as verified.  :)

Hello,

I don't know whether anyone has added this:

JobCentre Plus
freephone 0800 854440.

It was listed as the number for Kingston JCP and elsewhere for Twickenham JCP, but I have a feeling this redirects to the standard JCP customer service number. I can't check it out as the line is closed at this time of the night but feel free to test it tomorrow and post the results.

Regards,
k.

It was listed where? I cannot find it in our database, although I wonder if it is one digit short and should in fact be 0800 085 4440 which is also not listed.  :-/

Sorry, the number was listed on smilelocal not on here, thanks for doublechecking anyway. That website also lists a few other geo numbers for JCP in Kingston and Twickenham but now it's clear these need not always be trusted. I can't post a link as I am too new to this forum (although not to saynoto0870).

I prepared a guide on finding Jobcentre Plus numbers here.

If you search the database there are several suggestions 01226 263082 /172 /110 /139 /120.

Please let us know what you try and how you get on in each case so we can list suitable alternatives and remove those that don't work so well.

For Andover jobcentre, the Excel sheet linked to on the first page gives 01264 826000.

However, they give you a small (A6) piece of paper headed 'Missed Appointments'.  On this it says 'Please telephone immediately on 01264 826054 if you cannot come to your appointed interview.'

I've not tried either number as my phone is currently not working and I'm waiting for the BT engineer to contact me.

Hello and welcome to SayNoTo0870.com.

I have joined your posting to the existing thread for Jobcentre Plus switchboard.

The Department for Work and Pensions, of which Jobcentre Plus is a part, has a policy whereby calls to initiate claims are free. In 2010 it came to an agreement with the main mobile networks so that customers of those networks could call these numbers for free.

As the link provided by CJT-80 says, 0800 055 6688 is for making a claim. Whilst they may put through, it would be innappropriate to channel calls through it by listing it as an alternative.

The listed, verified alternative for JobCentre Plus switchboard is 01603 248701.

Regarding 0800 055 6688 and 01603 248701

I have recently had to complete one of those 40 page forms in order to renew the benefits I have been receiving since 2007 when I was registered disabled.

The form quotes the 0800 055 6688 number to call if you have any questions.
I tried this number 4 times and was told by very abrupt switchboard ladies
that the number was Only for new claims, or, they can give you an 0845 number
to call your local office.  [Great, another 0845, no thanks]

I then used the 01603 248701 which was last posted by Dave.
This got me through to nicer switchboard ladies who rung me back to save my money,
and then they re-directed me to the correct office.

Using either of these numbers you should be able to get your problems resolved
....without using the pesky 0845s !

Keep up the brilliant work on this website   :)

Calling this number works, if you need to find out about payments.

Choose option 7, option 3 gives you an 0845 number too call.

When put through ask where you want to go, new claims, payments, etc etc.

01603 248 701

They did ask how I got the number, I told them the internet is a wonderful thing and I am not paying the government money that I get very little of.

They put me through  ::)
