Probably yes. You could go there in person; it's on the corner with Spurriergate, near to Boots, what used to be Woolworths.

I live in Co Durham but need to speak to this bank in York so visiting is not an option.

So perhaps you would furnish us with some basic information such as the full address and the 0845 number in question as suggested in the guide for posting a request.

I went to Google and put in natwest market street york 01904 and the last link on the first page of results is which says:

No, this number is a direct line for a loan department manager within the bank and the number answers with a voice mail message.

Every link gives NatWest's number as 0845. They are not disclosing their branch number.

Search the database for natwest (rather than National Westminster) and try one of the central numbers such as telephone banking on 01274 394611.

The 01274  number is for account holders only but eventually I spoke to a person who said the only number for any branch is 0845.    So there is no alternative.   Shame on NatWest.

If you go to the branch finder and put in YO1 into the post code box, it returns a number for "international" callers, 020 8804 4892. Have you tried that?

Yes, and it is again for account holders only as it requires an account number!!   Gladly I am not a NatWest customer but my blind father is and I needed to speak to them without paying over the odds.   I shall write to them.

I have checked the website 192 but there is no number other than 0845 for Market Street York. Whilst this is free at local rate I am not local but national to York and I refuse to pay up to 8p per minute for the privilege of contacting a bank who are supposed to be working for its customers!  Thank you for your help but there is seemingly NO alternative.

There is no such thing as local rate. Local rate was abolished years ago ( I think 2004).

It costs the same to telephone your next door neighbour as it does to someone the other side of the country.


0845  numbers are inclusive with BT, depending which calling plan you are on. (and from anywhere in the country!!!)

I see.  News to me.  I shall check with my BT account. Not something heavily advertised!  thank you.

My unlimited anytime plan makes 0845 numbers free for up to 60minutes.  Thank you.  However, for people who do not have this, the principle that only 0845 numbers are available for companies like banks, who take our money and give little in return, is unacceptable.    Thank you.

Yes quite!  I have more than halved my phone bill since December though and that's better in my pocket than theirs!  Getting crosser in my advancing years!!

Different local and national rates are in effect for a tiny minority of BT customers who are on old and low user tariffs. For those, the cost of a 0845 call is the same as local rate. The national rate for them is about 8p per minute and these are the only BT tariffs that charge this much. Basically, you will probably have to jump through some hoops to get on one of these tariffs and most people are not on them.

In a subsequent posting you pointed out that you are in fact on the unlimited tariff (I gather you are referring to the "Anytime Calling Plan") which includes geographic, 0845 and 0870 calls at all times.

The golden rule is that with BT, 0845 calls are the same as (or less than) geographic calls; they are never more.

I must admit, as a small business it is very confusing - my telephone provider told me it is local rate for my customers, and checking all over this site there seems to be contradiction after contradiction on this matter - ASA too saying it's not, but the service provider adamant it is!  I'm more confused than ever !

Back in the day when there was only BT, it charged 0845 at the same rate as that for a local call. Also, national calls were more expensive than local ones.

The competition in the market has driven down the price of geographic calls (generally speaking), and not the cost of 0845 calls. Users of 0845 numbers benefit from subsidy from callers, and that is by design, which is why call providers (retailers) charge more.

The 03 "UK-wide" numbers are the neutral option for those who require a non-geographic number.
