Hi I have had an 0870 number for nearly a decade and I am about to move office and need to repoint the number. The original company who set it up for me went out of business and now I am lost as to who to contact. Does anyone have any idea if there is a governing body or facility to find out who to contact. Any advice would be much appreciated!  :)

Ofcom regulates providers of telephone service, so that may be your first point for enquiry. Alternatively you should contact whoever is billing you for the service.

Notwithstanding any investment you may have made in publicising the existing number, this would be an excellent opportunity for you to reconsider the position.

Up until July last year callers were paying for the advanced features on the 0870 number and perhaps providing you with a little additional revenue on each call. Since this revenue sharing arrangement ended you are now having to meet the full cost.

Despite efforts by Ofcom, most call providers (excluding BT) continue to levy premium charges on callers to 0870 numbers.

If the services you require cannot be provided on a geographic number, members of this forum would strongly advise you to consider use of a 03 number. As with 0870 you would continue to pay for the additional services, however callers cannot (by regulation which has 100% compliance) be charged more than the cost of an ordinary call to a geographic number - this covers calls from mobiles and the terms of inclusive packages).

To ease the problem of a number change, the equivalent 0370 number is reserved for you.

As a further incentive, you could earn a place in our "Hall of Fame" if you made such a change.
