Should we have done? :-?
If you're looking for an alternative to a 08 number and it isn't listed, then please provide it, if for no other reason so we might list it in the database when a suitable alternative is found. |

0845 3000 627 just general re tax codes. Can see geographical equivalents on your site, that must be all there is. If I get lucky I will add to your data base:-)

Just been through most of the listed alternative HMRC numbers which either ring ad nauseum, respond with a voice mail message referring to their website or respond with another automated message indicating that the number has been disconnected.
Does anyone have a landline or mobile number for the HMRC that is recent and known to work. Many thanks |

Please can you post the list of numbers you tried, along with a note to say what you found to assist me with removing those which are now disconnected. :) |

Those unable to get a BT landline who perhaps have a contract phone with T-Mobile would have calls to 01/02/03 numbers inclusive at all times. Some are happy to pay for music downloads; this would have cost £8.20 (at 41p per minute). That is more than I paid for the last double vinyl album I bought - over 80 minutes of music, although some may find the HMRC music on hold more to their taste! Is HMRC going into competition with i-tunes? |

Hi,
I am looking for an alternative no. of HMRC, HM Inspector of Taxes, Central London Area. I got a letter from that office on which contact no. is 02076674200 but I think that no. is not working. I spent about 2-3 hours to give a call on that number. So, can somebody provide a free or landline number please? Thanking you, Regards, Dip . saffy wrote on Feb 7th, 2011 at 2:13pm:

Hello and welcome to SAYNOTO0870.COM. Calls may or may not be answered locally. If it is the same office, then I would hazard a guess that other direct numbers may follow on from that, i.e. 7667 4201, 4202 etc upto however many they have (maybe hundreds if it's a large office). Alternatively, I understand that 01355 359022 is "Taxes Helpline" and 0161 931 9070 is "Self Assessment Helpline". |
Title: Re: HM revenue & Customs Tax office Post by SilentCallsVictim on Mar 2nd, 2011 at 5:55pm
020 7667 4200 is indeed the published number for the Corporation Tax Office Central London
Opening hours are 8.30 - 5.00 Monday to Friday. There is no non-geographic alternative given. saffy wrote on Feb 7th, 2011 at 2:13pm:
HMRC does not offer freephone numbers. Its continuing policy is to retain 0845 numbers for calls from individuals because it believes (falsely) that this is cheaper for them than calls to geographic or 03 numbers. This mistaken conclusion is addressed (at some length) here. |

From BT landlines, under current arrangements, they are generally the same. In some cases they are cheaper, in other cases (e.g. for benefit recipients on BT Basic) more expensive. If the Ofcom proposals to remove special conditions from BT come into effect, BT is likely to fall in line with the normal situation. The normal situation is for the telephone company to pass on the Service Charge (HMRC, and other 0845 users, benefit at the rate of 1.7p per minute) and to add its own Access Charge. At present these are combined and presented as a single rate. BT is currently prohibited from adding its own Access Charge - it cannot make any money on originating 0845 (and other NTS) calls. Ofcom proposes to lift this prohibition and demand that the two elements of the charge are "unbundled". Where some callers pay more and others pay less, there are many different ways of determining what is the proper option for a public service body to take. I address and cover some of these in the detailed briefing referred to above, with extensive worked examples showing how each would apply to HMRC and DWP. To put it simply, HMRC and DWP have got it wrong - even using their own very dodgy methods of drawing a conclusion. Whilst the profile of callers to any call centre will vary, BT currently originates around 25% of non-business telephone calls, according to information published by Ofcom. HMRC assumes a higher than normal proportion of calls from landlines; this is reflected in my figures. In truth, there is probably some "chicken and egg" here. Those who know how much it costs to call HMRC from their own mobile will probably ask a friend or neighbour if they can borrow their landline to make the call. In addition to the extensive briefing referred to above, I have published a simple table of relative call costs from various major providers. I argue these issues on a simple point of principle; I do however have to get drawn into the more detailed approaches which are used to defend use of 084 numbers - so as to debunk them on their own terms. |

A weekday daytime call to an 01, 02 or 03 number from my BT line costs 11½p call set-up fee + 7p/minute.
A weekday daytime call to an 0845 number from my BT line costs 11½p call set-up fee + 2.042p/minute. I think I am right with these figures |

Title: Re: HM revenue & Customs Tax office Post by SilentCallsVictim on Mar 2nd, 2011 at 9:38pm sherbert wrote on Mar 2nd, 2011 at 9:22pm:
Indeed. If you regularly make weekday daytime calls using BT, you will almost certainly be best advised to subscribe to the Unlimited Anytime Call Plan. That is the call plan designed for those who wish to avoid these penalty charges. They will be increasing again next month, whilst the charge for the Unlimited Anytime Plan will be reduced. The pence per minute rate for 0845 calls will not be increasing, because that (with the VAT you pay and some tiny allowance for direct BT costs taken off) is what goes to subsidise HMRC. BT now collects the service charges for 0845 calls in the Call Plan subscriptions. Because it cannot add any charge of its own it is able to do this whilst keeping the charge for the Call Plan competitive. BT acutally makes its money on 0845 calls by terminating them. |
