Not sure if I am posting on the right board, I have 2 phone calls from a foreign number, the number is +27448009886223, I tried google search, found nothing, all I know is where the call comes from +27 beimg the code for South Africa, I dont know anybody in South Africa, any help will be grateful please.

What is the purpose of this exercise?  :-? :-?

I assume that these were missed calls, unless you did answer and the caller refused to identify him or herself (which you haven't mentioned). People miss calls all the time; it is an occupational hazard of having a telephone as are wrong numbers!

Why is it the case that you wish to find out who this is (without ringing them back) or you have nothing better to do with your time than work out whoever it was that possibly called you in error?

According to Wikipedia telephone numbers in Africa are 10 digits long, including the trunk-dialling prefix 0. So that makes this number (when dialled from within the country) 0448009886223 which is 13 digits long!

Perhaps it is an erroneous CLI and should be +448009886223, which nationally from the UK is 08009886223. Maybe the +27 has been added because it originated from within South Africa.

I dont answer witheld numbers and those I do not recognise, I used to get a load of crank calls a few years ago for months, I now tell people if u dont have my number text me first or leave a voicemail.

Anyway i could not ring back even if I wanted too, I am barred to make int'l calls

I see. So having adopted your previously undeclared policy of not answering unknown numbers, which includes this number, you are now asking for a magician to come along and tell you want the caller wanted.  ::)

Had you had several calls from withheld numbers, then would you be asking for information on tracking down those caller(s)?

If you have a telephone and it is connected to a public telephone network, then expect people to call you, whether they know you or not.

Thanks for explaining that you are asking whether people have had calls from this number, something which you hadn't mentioned up to now. In the first posting you simply asked for "help". There was no explanation of what help you were asking for.

As you can see above, I spent some of my time to help you. I discovered that the number in question is in fact 3 digits too long, which suggests that it is not a valid number. I then suggested that following the "44" in the number, it could actually be a UK number.

If you put that 0800 number into Google it returns results. People suggest that this might be TalkTalk/Carphone Warehouse.

You might like to read those postings in more depth and post back here anything you might find.

The 0800 number that Dave found and put in his reply #1 comes  up with a couple of  companies including 'talk talk' and a makeover company

I got a call from this number today, luckily my phone was on silent so i didn't answer.

I investigated because i was curious by the international code +27 which is apparently south africa, my first thought was scam.

I decided to google the number and found this page (http://whocallsme.com/Phone-Number.aspx/27448009886223) which has a number of people reporting it to be a number used by people claiming to be microsoft techs stating that your computer needs scanning for viruses. The program they get you to download gives them access to your computer and identifies a large amount of viruses, they offer to provide an automated service for a fee, but even if you refuse they have remote access to your computer.

if it had been 08009886223, then it would have started with +44, the theory on the site mentioned above is that people will see the 44 800 and automatically think it's an 0800 number and free to phone.
