It is important to emphasise that there are rules that must be followed, and consequently it shouldn't be undertook lightly. There is a recent case of a sizeable sum being generated over a couple of years. Newt Beaumont who did it has said he went into it deeply to ensure that relevant codes were followed. After all, 0871 numbers are officially Premium Rate Services (PRS), regulated by PhonepayPlus, as you say. |

PayPhonePlus
Serious issues For more serious issues, we refer the case to the Investigations Team, who: ask you to respond to a formal investigation letter that sets out what rules of the Code appear to have been broken; and refer your case to a Tribunal to consider whether or not the rules of the Code have been broken The Tribunal is made up of members of the Code Compliance Panel. PhonepayPlus Code Compliance Panel PhonepayPlus Code of Practice and Guidance website Urgent issues If the issue requires urgent action, three members of the Code Compliance Panel may place an immediate bar on the service and prevent payment of any due revenue before the case goes to a Tribunal. Complaints schematic (PDF 847 KB) Investigations and sanctions procedure (PDF 633 KB) This information suggests that if the regulation is complied with in regard to providing a 0871 service the service can be provided, let me know your thoughts I am awaiting a reply from PayPhonePlus at present. |

Why not just use an 0844 number? These are nearly as expensive to call and require nothing re PayPhonePlus.
I got mine from SKYCOM Telecommunications,http://www.skycomuk.com/index.php these cost nothing to obtain and run and can generate money. They also have other numbers. . |

My irony detector is very severely damaged and the needle on my incredulity meter is so firmly wedged on the end stop I fear it may no longer be serviceable.
Am I reading this right? The position of some members here is: 1. You are opposed to businesses using high-rate numbers and want them "banned". 2. You want businesses to pay those same high rates when they call customers or potential customers. 3. Nuisance phone calls are to be tolerated if the recipient is making money out of it. Is there a ::mind boggled:: icon I can insert here? |

Sometimes an obvious response to a situation (known as "common sense") can be the right response. Some of us would argue that the deliberately unconsidered consequences of such a response may sometimes produce an effect that is not what is desired. As a point of principle, if use of "high-rate numbers" (imposition of a Service Charge) is not appropriate when no additional service is being provided, then surely this is true for everyone. Allowing for exceptions under particular circumstances gets one into very tricky water. The proposal and the comments seek to promote general warfare between all consumers and all businesses. Some of us are concerned about the issues of misuse of "high rate numbers" and nuisance calls, and wish attention to be focussed on those who are engaged in these unacceptable practices. I recognise the common sense instinct to fight back against whoever may be in reach when one is hurt in some way. This is a perfectly understandable and natural human reaction. I also recognise that this often makes a problem worse. |

That is the point We Are Not Customers, and in the majority of cases companies have gained information from unsuspecting members of the public completing some kind of survey and they do not expect to receive marketing calls from some company they have never heard of. If I want double glazing or something simular I will visit an appropriate local outlet. After all it is an invasion of privacy |
