CLI can be faked. If you see an obvious fake, simply don't answer the call. If you see what could be a valid number but it is one you don't recognise be wary of who is calling. If you see a number you do recognise, such as your bank, this is no guarantee that this is who is actually calling.

Contrary to popular belief, caller display does not (necessarily) tell you who is calling.

Caller display provides the number on which the caller would like you to call them back, should you wish to. Obviously an outbound call centre or an automated dialler cannot invite you to call back on the number they use to call you, so a "presentation number" is provided instead.

Some people foolishly think that the only way of hiding the identity of a caller is to provide no number at all.

My personal view is that a voice telephone call is all about what is said by the two parties, including whatever may be said, or demanded, by way of identification. People can get very excited about CLI - the number that is displayed or retrieved by calling 1471. This is however often based on a misunderstanding of what it represents.
