Title: Are mobile phone numbers compulsory?
Post by PJRastrick on Dec 24th, 2019 at 4:54pm
I know this is tangential to this "campaign", but today I have been using well known comparison sites for motor insurance.  Most of them require a mobile phone number to be input before the quote can progress.  The field will not accept a landline number, not can it be left blank.  I do not use a mobile phone, but as a workaround used a friend's number, with their permission of course.  Why does it appear to be compulsory to use a mobile phone?  What do other people think?  Is this another thin end of another wedge?

There's plenty of invalid mobile numbers you can use... think along the voicemail and C/S lines for starters.

On the issue of why some service providers and insurers make it impossible to complete their webforms without one, well I'd treat the form with the contempt they're clearly treating me in that case. And find any invalid number that the form will accept.

So many things require a mobile phone nowadays, surprised you've got by without one. Maybe just get a cheap one just to use for verification and things?

I don't think you can go by today without a phone number.

I think you will find the OP didn't suggest that.  Lots of people may possess a mobile phone but never use it.  It's possible as time goes on that the number of those people without a mobile at all will decrease.
