Regardless of BT's bad points it's FREE to call 150 from a BT landline anytime of the day

Yet another reason NOT to go with Sky!

Excellent!  Tried the number ending 6 and was put straight through to Sky with the options.Spoke to retentions and managed to get a much better deal altogether, so a double result!  Thank you.

Can confirm the number ending in 6 still works. Got through to Sky and asked to have Sports removed. They offered me £10.25 off for the next 6 months to keep it, which is little more than I would have been paying if I took the sports off so I've kept it.

I hope I'm not jumping to conclusions but I would have thought that well over 95% of Sky customers only have the one phone line with just Sky in their home.  Furthermore in households where there are two or more phone lines it seems entirely probable that in many cases the other line might be with a different telephone company from Sky.

So in reality calling Sky about a faulty Sky phone line is usually not going to be free, especially as in most cases the phone call to Sky to report the fault is surely likely to be from a mobile phone.  And as we know 0844 numbers are almost never included in mobile phone company bundled minutes packages.

I thought that the use of premium customer service numbers for telephone companies is in no way limited to Sky. Virgin Media uses 0845 numbers. What about Talk Talk and Post Office Home Phone and other providers?

BT has not introduced charges and operates Freephone and UK-wide (03) numbers, particularly for calls from outside of its network. So calling BT customer services or faults is free from a landline or payphone or geographic rate from mobile phones.

Tried this today and also pressed 1 and got through.   The Sky box needed a reboot so it took about 15 minutes (with a very helpful guy in L/derry, in northern ireland.

I think you must mean that the Sky box firmware needed re-downloading and installing (hold down the Backup key for several seconds after disconnecting the mains power and then reconnecting it until you get a black and white text screen about downloading the firmware) as that is the only process I know that takes up to 10 minutes or so to complete on a Sky box.

Just want to add that for those of you who have their land line with Orange, depending on what 'package' you have, 0808's are chargeable.
Yesterday I rung Orange twice, and both advisors informed me that 0808 are the same as 0800 - free
Today I spent 1 hour talking to Sky on the above number.  I rung Orange a 3rd time just to confirm that the call was free.......
The Manager I spoke to asked 2 separate advisors about 0808 charges for customers who have Home Max Broadband and land line,
and he was told that I would be charged the same as if I had dialled an 0845 number  Shocked   
He has credited my account to cover the cost, and the advisors are for the high jump. 

Probably the same with BT and all providers, depends on the package etc.

So, I am still looking for either a free phone or geo number for Sky.

No charge for 0800 or 0808 numbers with BT Landline. However most mobile providers charge for these numbers I believe.

However As has been mentioned previously, the dial-through geographical numbers for use from mobiles are 020 0222 0900 and 020 0222 0700. Using one of these will allow calls to 0800/0808/0500 so-called "freephone" numbers. Charges will be as geographical calls, thus will often reduce the cost from mobiles.
