I just tried 01506 421844 and got through to a lady who could advise me on having Sky broadband. She didn't ask me where I got the number from, by the way!
As long as you didn't tell her what number you were using, there is no reason for her to ask. Anyway, it is not a good idea to let these companies know that you are using a geographical number, as they may disconnect that number.
Yes indeed. If you ever get asked, "What number did you call?" always reply, "Sky" (or whatever company you're calling).
If they get persistent, say something like, "0844 something or other, I can't remember now" and if they get really persistent, give them the full number you
should be calling and then just maintain your "What are you on about?" position.
