Thanks for this very useful resource.

When you sign up for a 1and1 domain it isn't obvious, to me at least, that you are signing up for two years, and that they will take a second payment.

My card expired before they tried to charge it for year 2 and so they wrote me a threatening letter.  Of course it is almost impossible to deal with them.  When you manage to get a phone number they wont update your card details by phone and I have ended up with a situation where having returned from holiday I have discovered that they have set a debt recovery agency on me to recover the debt that I did not know that I was liable for.

At least now I will be able to deal with them without paying the 0870 fees. Thank you.

Is it a .uk domain that you have registered? If so, they are registered for two years. 1&1 Internet specifically state that they will renew domains/packages automatically until you tell them otherwise. See this FAQ.

I failed to read the small print and it's my fault, but it is one of those cases where you don't know that the small print will affect you so you don't read it.  I know that I will have to pay this bill, but I just think that 1and1 make it as difficult as possible to deal with them.

Again, I am glad not to have to use an 0870 number as that would add insult to injury.

I also have had problems with 1and1 where I have been charged for things I didn't want as the sign up didn't give you any warning before the charge was made to my cc. I spent a fortune on the 0870 number before I got hold of the geographic one.
Has anyone noticed that when you dial 01753 490404, the recorded message says it's a free phone? Anybody got that number?
Never got a reply to all my emails and phone calls so I will be changing hosts at the next anniversary.
Best wishes
Collin

I sent 1and1 a letter in the post, several e-mails, too many phone calls to count and they have still not responded to my complaint.

It seems that these people dont give a dam about the customer, i will continue to try and get my issues resolved but as for my business....... they have lost it.

If your looking for a good host that will fix problems much faster than 1 and 1 then try www.terraprime.co.uk, they are only a small company but they seem to be able to get it rignt and the prices are good.

Who knows someone might just deal with my complaint before I move the last few domains.

I used to use the 01753 490xxx numbers.  Just tried again today and none of them work.  Anybody know what they've changed to?

Cheers,

Nick

I know it's late but, for the sake of clarity, the url philipwalsh quoted included a spurious comma - so it didn't work.

He meant to quote http://www.terraprime.co.uk/

However, the 2004 dates thereon are rather worrying.

In what way don't they work? I've just called them and they answer with a recording and put the caller in a queue.

Thanks for this helpful thread.

Just called (141) 01753490555 after being cut off the first time my call was answered, and got through to a very helpful cs representative - NOT ENGLISH!! -  who did at least give an answer to all my queries, and whose english was prety good.

After reading this thread though, I think i'll try one of the smaller uk companies, i just left dataflame this am because I couldn't understand the person who answered their phone line in deepest darkest outer mongolia... or somewhere... might as well have been talking to someone from mars!!!

I have been using 1and1.co.uk for 7 years and I am very satisfied with their service. Whenever I have had a problem (usually my own error) they have helped me out of it very quickly. I once managed to destroy the whole directory structure on my domains and they had it up and running again within a couple of hours. There's no accounting for the stupid things people do, I did a "chmod", as I thought, on a file. No, it was on the main directory. It didn't matter what I did I couldn't get into it again.

Hi,

Just like to add that I called the 401 number listed above and the lady on the phone gave me the number for their administrative department as she claimed she couldn't help me.

The number she gave me is 01753490456

Well I just called this number after trying about 30 different ones, and blow and behold after 3 rings an extremely polite indian gentleman answered the phone. If you call the 0871 number you get extremely rude and unhelpful american call center...

Anyway basically my problem was they disconnected my server, my payment failed and they sent me a letter saying i should call so i did and they said i should update my billing details and everything would be fine, which i did only to discoover 3 days later they locked my server - therfore shutting all my websites (over 20) and all my email addresses! anyway a long story short because it is outside office hours the billing department is shut. So i called the 247 support only to get an idiot telling me he has no authority to do anything. after spending ages searching online I finally founf this site and started ringing all the numbers for 1and1, and finally this one worked and I have managed to sort out my account and my server should be back online in 6 hours! compared to waiting till morning and calling the billing department and telling them to turn it on which will take the 48 hours!

So any problems with 1and1 call this number! for very polite and helpful staff, in an ideal world it would be an english call center but at least his english was perfect and was the most helpful person i have ever spoken to at 1and1!
01753 490555

Needless to say I will be contacting thier normal billing department tomorrow demanding a rather large sum of money for compensation.
