RAC Membership & Breakdown (Read 43,908 times)

Anyway, they have a recording asking you not to, but if you call the free rescue number 0800 828282 (or 08000 828282) they can transfer you through to customer services. Worked for me just now. Good thing too -- the CS queue was 15 minutes!

Ok, not much to pay when you are in need of assitance but neverthless, annoying.

I can only describe it as criminal that these mobile phone companies are allowed to charge more for freephone numbers than geographical numbers. The receiving company (in this case RAC) will be paying to make the call free. Of course, most of the calls to these breakdown numbers will be from a mobile phone. When they were first implemented this probably wasn't the case. Perhaps you could point out these facts to RAC and request that they supply you with a geographical alternative. If they refuse, emphasise that it's costing them money as well you extra, whereas an underlying geographical number will not cost RAC anything.

The AA have an 0845 breakdown number aswell for calling from a mobile phone. Roll Eyes

The RAC just says "Calls from mobile phones may be charged by your network" for freephone breakdown numbers.

You did well, their website lists an 0870 number for Customer Services and contains the usual garbage:

Street Stretford Manchester M32 0XH Tel 0161 8661000 Unfortunately the above phone number refers the caller to the 0800 number for breakdown out of office hours. Still, it's a start if you drive 9 to 5.

Hi, I've been using the site for ages, but obviously new to the forum. Can't find a search function, Is there one? so apologies if this is covered elsewhere.

RAC - I have been given 0800 051 1404 to call for breakdown assistance. This is a chargeable call from my mobile.
I have found 01628843890 on this site for H.O., but not sure if they will put me through to breakdown, nor if they are open 24/7.
Does anyone have a geographical number for breakdown?
Or even better, is there an 0800 number for breakdown that IS free from mobiles? (I always thought AA & RAC did have such a thing) My membership is a 3 months freebie so wondered if they didn't give me the best number to call for breakdown.

You ring this number before calling the 0800 (/ 0808 / 0500) number, and it acts as if you are calling a geographic number. The two numbers you can call are 020 0222 0700 and 020 0222 0900.
