Alan,

In this case we are talking "Say No to 0871" which is an even bigger evil than 0870!  Once you are a Topuptv customer you can only call the customer service centre on 0871 and this costs 10p per minute at all times (even off peak and weekends).  Their 0870 sign up number is completely automated and you cannot get through to a person on that.

Topuptv 's customer services is run for them by Mgt Management  (www.mgtplc.com) but the web site for those little so and sos only shows an 0870 number to call and at Directory Enquires when putting in Mgt and Kirkcaldy its the same sorry story - 0870 only.  I'm quite sure they would also refuse to connect you to the Topuptv customer service line if you called to try and at least get round the 0871 rate.

Also the staff manning Topuptv's customer service line have been trained to lie to customers about the cost of calls on the 0871 number by telling them it is the BT National standard rate.  I emailed them a complaint but they didn't reply which is strange as they replied straight away to a query I had about becoming a subscriber.

The fact is that David Chance and Ian West who run topuptv are money grabbers pure and simple and they couldn't give a 4x for what their customers think of them.  Also emails to david.chance@topuptv.com and ian.west@topuptv.com bounce back as "not found".  Enough said I think.

In short I guess when they picked a yellow hatted garden gnome as their company mascot they were trying to tell you somting about their company ethics?!

If you want to register your displeasure with the Topuptv director responsible for making us have to call 0871 (at 10p per minute 7 days a week) for their customer services you can do so by emailing David Chance using the email address of david@topuptv.com

So far I have been unable to change his mind regarding the 0871 thing.  His view seems to be that we are getting the channels for a low price so if we want to call up then we must expect to help his company's profitability

08712 712 712

dunno if it helps - but the number is owned by Thus.

Thanks for telling us this but all that means is that Thus provide the 0871 call routing and revenue sharing service.  It does not tell us how to contact Mgt management (www.mgtplc.com) who run the call centre for Topuptv.

All attempts to get a non geographic telephone number for Mgt management result in failure and anyhow even if you could find a number to call their main switchboard non geograpically and asked them for Topuptv customer services they would undoubtedly tell you to call the 0871 number?

I recommend all TopUptv customers emailing their unhappiness over this matter to David Chance who actually runs the company using the email address david@topuptv.com

i think Top Up TV is gay. Have done a search on mgt plc and they are in Kirkcaldy, and the code is 01592.

would make a small but rather nice dent in Top Up TV's profits if we could find the number

Top Up Tv Customer Services - 0871 2712712
Reply #8 - Mar 20th, 2005 at 1:17pm

Does anyone have any geographic numbers for the customer services department or customer sales lines of TopUpTv (www.topuptv.com) or the people who run the customer call centres for them (www.mgtplc.com). ; The customer services department of TopUpTv is on 0871 2712712 and their new customer sales line is on 0870 0543210.

TopUpTV's head office is at 2nd Floor, Riverside House, 20 Old Bridge Street, Hampton Wick, Surrey KT1 4BN but there is no phone number listed with Directory Enquiries there.  Also Mgt PLC's head office address is at 8 Golden Square, London W1F 9HY and their customer service centre is at Cluny Court, John Smith Business Park, Kirkcaldy, Fife KY2 6QJ.  But the only numbers listed for MGT with directory enquiries all begin 0870.

But surely someone somewhere must have a geographic number for MGt in London or Kirkcaldy or for TopUpTv in Hampton Wick?

Surely even with those little yellow gnome hats they must still have a real phone number somewhere?

I look forward to your suggestions.

Hello NGM.  Try:-

Top Up Tv

(020)  89776097

20, Old Bdge St
Hampton Wick, Kingston Upon Thames
KT1 4BU

I got this by a simple search on http://www.118500.com !

I think the classic mistake that people make is that they forget to select the 'Business' tab.  The default is for private people and of course if you put a business in there, it will fail!

By the way, I am new to this site, but I notice you are on here a lot.  On the 'suggestions' sections I made a request for a glossary of terms.  Unfortunately no one has replied at all.  I have recently discovered what NTS means, but there are still other terms I think.  Eg, what does CLI mean?

If you are knowledgable, would you be able to post a brief reply with commonly used terms and their meanings?

Many thanks

Thanks for this.  The mistake I made was not to fail to use the Business tab but to fail to include spaces between Top and Up and Up and Tv.  And since I tried all possible variants of Mgt (who annoyingly fall foul of www.bt.com/directoryenquiries stupid 4 letter minimum rule of which BT, BBC and ITV also all fall foul) I assumed the worst in this case.

I will give this number a try tomorrow and see what happens but feel sure I will be told to call 0871 etc for their customer services.  Of couse it might be more interesting to ask to speak to Ian West or Matt Seaman and see what happens.  I believe that David Chance (another TopUpTv Director) sadly does not work full time at the Top Up Tv offices as he is busy with other money making ventures.

Regarding other terms:-

CLI = Calling Line Identity which is the number shown by Caller Display.  It is not an 0870 specific issue.

NGN = Non Geographic Number.  These are numbers that start 03 to 09 rather than 01 to 02, that generally cost you more money to call, are excluded from BT Option 3 and BT's standard off peak pricing for 01/02 calls.  They are the reason that this website had to be created.

CPS = Carrier Pre-Selection.  A service provided by Tiscali, Talk Talk, Onetel etc that lets calls on your BT line be routed via their network without having to enter an indirect access code first each time.

Local Call Rate = A non existent call rate no longer in use and abolished by BT on 1st July 2004.  However BT still attempts to attribute this term to calls prefixed by 0845 despite Trading Standards believeing that such claims are misleading and illegal.

I can' think of any other jargon we use in particular but if there is something that is confusing you then please let me know.

I used 118118.com, which often comes up trumps, but not in this case.

Annoyingly, it saw MGT and listed all the companies with "Management" in their name! I discovered that entering M G T solved this problem (but then it only listed the 0870 number anyway).

A good place to start might be an entry that was placed into the Unverified numbers today.

Quote:
0871 2712712 -
0208 9776097
-  Call this number to speak to Matt Seaman (TuTV Sales and Marketing Director) or Ian West (TuTV Operations Director) to complain about 0871 number used for their customer services operation.

Let us know if it leads to anything else. As a contact number, we cannot include it, but if it helps finding other contacts it's been useful.   Roll Eyes

I only managed to find the same -

MGT Limited
Cluny Court
John Smith Business Pk
Chapleton Dv
KIRKCALDY, KY2 6QJ

0870 840 7000

MGT plc
PO Box 200

Top Up Tv
20, Old Bridge St
Hampton Wick,
Kingston Upon Thames

Undecided

I emailed TopUpTV over their breaking ASA/CAP & OfCOM guidelines over their 0870 & 0871 numbers and got a reply back from Matt Seaman, Sales and Marketing Director:-

Quote:
Many thanks for your email - very informative. As I am sure you are aware, the rules on such issues change with a certain amount of regularity, but of course we always intend to stay within the OFCOM rules.

Best regards

Matt

Now the reply to me doesn't specifically state that he is going to put the cost of these numbers on their website so I emailed him back and not received anything as yet.

One thing I noticed though from his reply is that it seemed to me that he is aware that ASA/CAP can't do anything over their website but obviously OfCOM is a different matter for which he does state he always intends to stay within OfCOM rules.

If I haven't got a reply to my follow-up email within a week, I'm going to pass this on their local trading standards area.
