Skype

Hi,

Does anyone here use Skype?

Downloaded it yesterday and the girlfriend's house and got her a £9.99 headset and the voice calling quality between two broadbanded PCs is excellent.

www.skype.com

It's PC to PC calling with the option to pay very little when breaking out on POTS calls. Beats any IP phone I've used in the past, no need for dedicated IP addresses or routers, just simple cheap calling.

Yes Skype is great. The audio quality on PC to PC calls is so much better than MSN, AIM, Yahoo where I usually find poor audio and half second delays, with Skype you get crystal clear audio and no delay.

Skype has become even more sophisticated, I use it for all my calls when I'm at home both to other PC users (free calls) or to landline or mobile numbers (it’s currently 1.7 Euro Cent (that would be around 2 US cents or 1.1 pence) per minute to more than 20 countries).   Cheesy

I started off using a pc headset to make the calls, I progressed to using my bluetooth headset, and now I have my DECT phone connected to the PC via a RJ11 adapter.  8)

I pay €30 (about £20) a year to have my own UK number and voicemail service so anyone can call me from a normal or mobile phone as well!

I am extremely impressed with the sound quality of the programme and would recommend it to anyone (didn't want to post an affilliate link here as wasn't sure if I could) but the site you can look at is www.Skype.com

Sure!  Cheesy Assuming you already have a DECT phone ........

1. First you need a usb adaptor, I got mine from Ebay for £25.00 including post and packaging (I just searched for Skype products an searched through to find one at a good buy it now price) it was with me in about 36 hours.

2. You also need (I know that some adaptors come with these, some don't) another small adaptor that basically converts a UK phone lead to a US one.

3. All you do then is connect the adaptor to a free usb port

4. Plug your phone into the box (using the US to UK adaptor)

5. If you want to you can also plug your landline into the box as well at this stage

6. Install a small programme on your pc, the one I have is called CallMe, it configures the connection to your phone, allows you to change the volume etc.

7. Set Skype to ring and receive calls from a USB device

That's it, your phone will receive calls from both the USB (Skype or other VoiP provider) and from your landline, you can set them to have different ringing tones so that you know which is calling too.

Hope this helps  8)

Not sure how this affects the service at all, but you may like to know that ebay has just bought Skype.  Does this mean prices are going up/down? ???
