1899 VoIP
Jan 31st, 2005 at 2:38pm

I just have to confess, I love 1899`s new BETA VoIP system, its so easy to use, its bloody wonderful and I love sitting at the PC talking away for ages now without worrying about the cost..

I might even safely say goodbye to my land line if this keeps up good standards!

thank you 1899 Smiley

I too have installed the VOIP software. However, I haven't got a mic at the moment so I cannot really use it. I noticed that it says there is a setting for our incoming ring. Do you, or anyone else for that matter, know how you receive incoming calls on VOIP?

Hi, Just been emailed by 1899 ref voip. please what does voip stand for?
I contacted my computer supplier to see if I had holes to plug mike @ earphones into & he seemed a bit wary of this process & suspicious of the software.
Do you need earphones or can you hear through speakers? Can you receive calls from a landline?
Does it work on Broadband? What a lotta questions!!!!

Be aware that at the moment they are still charging the 3p connection fee for VOIP calls even though the email said there is no connection charge. - So check your online bill if you have been using the VOIP service.

I can confirm I have placed 9 calls using 1899 VOIP, and the online billing shows 'FREE' next to each call for me.

Thanks
Daniel

Yes all my calls show up as FREE except one to a mobile at 10p/min .
I find it works great with Speakers and a microphone .

No one seems to have answered Tony B's question.

VOIP stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol".

I receive calls by having a Sipgate number free.

And use 1899 VoIP service when calling non VoIP numbers.

VOIP - already answered
I have installed the VOIP software and it uses my PC speakers. I haven't got a mic yet but hopefully it will work okay.
To receive calls over VOIP I think you need a geographical number to link to it, ie. you can pick a number from a list but it may well cost (PS. this is just from memory, I haven't actually done it)
It works on broadband best of all!

You don't actually need a geographical number to receive calls on a VoIP service, but by not having one, you can only receive calls from other VoIP users, and if you use Skype which is a proprietary system, then only from other Skype users.  Skype will be launching Skype in soon, which allows incoming calls from any phone.

You are better off though with Sipgate, as they offer for no setup fee and no monthly charge a geographical number of any area code you wish to choose, you do not have to live in that area.  You can then make calls to any other Sipgate user for free, and unlike Skype with Sipgate you can call many other VoIP provider numbers free too.

With Sipgate you receive calls just as you would a normal land line, and you can if you wish use Sipgate to call out to standard number too.

Ideal solution is to have a Sipgate number for receiving calls, and then also use 1899's VoIP service where appropriate.

It is possible, but you require the right codecs, as the ones used for voice are lossy, it's also difficult to find any software to do it, unless you want to create a Asterisk box for both VoIP and FoIP.
