BT price lists
Feb 12th, 2005 at 11:29am

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but does anyone know of a site that gives a straight forward BT price list ? I've been onto the BT site but to say they have made it difficult is a major understatement !!

If you're talking about BT's prices for calls to non-geographical numbers, they're all listed HERE.

I presume you've seen The BT Price List. I agree, to say that it's not user-friendly is an understatement. When you compare the BT.com website and the Price List, you can see that it's something they have to publish but don't really want you to look at it.

They have, over recent years improved the main site to include rates to mobile networks and so on. See here. Select Residential then:
  • for mobiles, select Calls to Mobiles -> Calls to Mobiles from BT Together fixed lines. If you have a non-discount package, select Calls to Mobiles from fixed BT Lines.
  • for other numbers (for 'discounted' packages like Together), select UK Calls - General Information -> UK Call Prices. This shows 0845/0870 prices  and the Specialised Numbers link goes to the page Bill mentioned above.

The pages that interest Joe Public on The BT Price List are as follows (they've changed it again! Roll Eyes).

I hope this helps.  Smiley

BT has removed the 'Specialist Numbers' lists which showed the prices of each non-geographical code. This has been replaced by a PDF which shows prefixes with the Charge Rate code by them, and pricing of each Charge Rate (see here. This document shows prices at BT non-discounted rates! See BT pricing information for more information.

I notice this page now doesn't refer to 0845 and 0870 as "premium rate services". See this post on The Scream! Forums for a screen shot of how it used to be.

Also, where has the table gone which shows the rates to each mobile network? I can't find it.

BT has produced this FAQ about the removal of Pricing Information Service (PIS).
Quote:
Q2. How many customers were registered to receive the PIS updates?
A2. Only a small proportion of our residential customer bases - just 20k for written communication and 5k for email communication.

So those who do want informing on when prices change are now denied this.

More confusion: The Pricing Information section still has a tool to tell you what your local call area, even though local and national doesn't exist on BT Together, the tariff that had you landed from outer space and read BT.com, you would believe is the only way to get a BT line.

Time for Ofcom to require all operators to provide a readily accessible and clear tariff sheet.

Fat chance in the UK   Angry

Dave, you do not expand on BT removing the statement from their page that 0845 and 0870 were "premium rate services". [See this post on The Scream! Forums for a screen shot of how it used to be.]

The key issue surely is that the reason BT have altered this  is that they have clearly preconsulted with Ofcom again, in advance of Ofcom's now delayed announcement on NTS, and both must have deplored their errors in their apparently independent faux pas (s) of their printed and verbal statements admitting the truth about this abuse, which they had always previously vigorously denied. They are clearly papering-up the cracks to attempt again to present an apparently coherent position of no change with NTS (except of course some tinkering with the National/Local nomenclature and other sops to feign some objective action).

The above, sadly, is exactly what will happen. Ofcom needs to retrospectively address all those errors it has made, including its spokesmen describing 0870 as "premium rate". Mr Peacock has been somewhat quiet in recent times. My prediction is that the COI advice will be next - it will be toned down such that 0870 will be fully acceptable. Let's face it, the NTS scandal has won and we have lost. Ofcom will do little other than mandate a more correct description of the rip-off. A victory for stupidity and clueless regulation.
