Cheapest Calls
Feb 20th, 2005 at 11:21pm

I have just updated this list. No real changes though. If anyone has any cheaper ways to call UK destinations other than those shown, please let me know.

www.nowherenearthegarden.com/calls

(PS. I dont want to know where there are better or more informative lists as I am only interested in the cheapest rates this time.. thanks)

Well done Ric. I reckon this is a well produced layout and I've printed a copy off. How often do you do an update ?. islandman

You may think the layout "well produced", but what about the quality of the data?

Just at a glance the information for 18866 and 1899 is incorrect. Their rates are shown as "cost per minute" which is untrue!

I think you should read it again! The chart shows shows 0.00p / min but with the minimum charge shown at the top. i.e 1p for 18866 & 3p for 1899.

Good site

Just need to check the Evening and Daytime hours - the BT day now starts at 6am instead of 8am. Deep joy!!

What's the point of 0845? Local rate my ar$e. Usually MORE than Inverness to Penzance on normal nos. Occasionally the same, never less!&&&&OFCOM - A Truly Great Regulator, if you're out to gouge consumers

Just read the comment about BT starting at 6am, instead of 8am!!

I signed up to Tele2, a few months ago, and was promised free calls in the evenings and weekends, but just looked on their site, and they also start their daytime at 6am, instead of 8am!!

I know I made a couple of my calls then, however when I signed up to them, I was told by the Indian salesman that daytime is between 8am - 6pm.  I have not had any communication from them telling me that they now class 6am-8am as daytime now.

I haven't received a bill yet, as I make my few daytime calls with 18866, and only use Tele2, to make my free calls, and don't pay a monthly fee to them.

I'll certainly be annoyed if I get any call charges, as this change of the terms and conditions of service has been imposed without letting me know!!

Brainbox,

I think you should read what is actually there on the website again and note the statement "per second billing" at the top, and consider the difference between minimum charge, connection charge and total charge for any duration. (They are not the same!) It is this which is misleading and inaccurate for 1899 and 18866 on that site.

I stand by my point that although Islandman may like the "quality of the layout" the quality of some of the data is suspect, and downright misleading for anyone not completely familiar with the nature of the call charges made by 1899 and 18866. You obviously are familiar with their call charge basis and so you read that into it, without considering what is actually stated!

doft... please put your handbag down. Maybe you could explain to us mere mortals about the difference between this that and the other.

seems to me that.

1p minimum charge and 0p minute = 1p per call
3p minimum charge and 0p minute = 3p per call
5p minimum charge and 2.7p minute = 5p + 2.7p a minute per call

Please share your vast knowledge with us all....! (i could do with a good nights sleep)

I have to agree with dorf. The minimum charge with 1899 and 18866 is actually a connection charge. However, it does read correct, ie it costs 0p/min but you will be charged 1p. The problem is that when you look at 0845/0870 prices are stated per minute with a 1p minimum charge, whereas it is x ppm plus a connection charge.

Would not a more accurate way of showing charges be to show what a (say) 5 minute call would cost, including connection and any other minimum charges?

oh my god... i have never known such negativity... if you want the price of a 5 min call then look at the per minute charge, multiply it by 5...then add the connection charge.

I did this list for my own use, and though some might find it useful. Dont know why I bothered.

Mind you, for those who have messaged me to say thank you... thank you..

to those who moan... if you dont find it useful - look elsewhere or make up your own.. quite simple really.

Right... Im off for a pint.. turrah!

Surely this could be resolved by adding a seperate entry line that diffentiates between minimum call charge and flat call connection charge ... the latter being in addition to any call costs and the former being incorporated in any charges incurred? ..or am I missing something

Anyway the table is a good one very simple and otherwise clear...I like it ..thanks
