Sorry TonyB about the techy stuff - I'm a bit sad..
Quote:Anyway if you use this new system what happens if the person you are calling has their computer off? & presumably you have to have yours on to receive incoming calls.
You buy a SIP VoIP phone that plugs straight into your broadband line. Or an adaptor that lets you connect your existing normal phone (even a DECT handset) connect to the broadband. So you don't even need a computer.
Quote:Anyhow, to a coffin dodger like me when I do the sums the calls are not free since isn't it essential that you pay for broadband + BT line rental?
Yep! But I need broadband anyway; and I'm lucky to have cable.
Quote:I make 160 or so calls a month costing 1p connection =£!.62 At this rate a years worth of calls in equipment!! + the electricity + -------
Your sums are correct
But I make around 30 calls a day - many to international destinations.
Don't forget that all these VoIP providers give you a normal landline number as well for "ordinary" folk to call you! I even have an incoming Beverly Hills telephone number!
