Sipgate VoIP
Mar 10th, 2005 at 9:03pm

Hi - I've just signed up for 18866 and Sipgate VoIP (at uni in Cambridge and kind of 'helps' to have a Bradford number for people to get me on for various reasons).

18866 is working fine and dandy (well impressed) using the 0808 number from my NTL phone. When I dial 0808 1 701 701 from NTL and then dial my Sipgate number, it rings but when I don't dial 18866 first I get a recorded message saying that the number dialled is disconnected or no longer in service.

Any idea what may be causing this?

Rich

Maybe NTL haven't updated their database with the new range of numbers used by Sipgate.

I'm trying to sign up with them and am only being offered the option of a geographical number in germany or an 0845/0870 number.  Shocked Angry  I'm only signing up this late as we've only just got broadband at home.

Sounds like you are an AOL user.  AOL don't use a UK range of IP addresses so Sipgate thinks you are from outside the UK, therefore not offering you a UK geographic number.

You can get round this by either signing up whilst using another ISP, or go via a proxy server - a list available from: http://www.proxy4free.com/page1.html find a UK proxy add this into your browser (ease dependant on browser used) once you have your number you can remove proxy.

Fantastic, you're a star!!

We're actually using Plusnet for our broadband, but I'm all signed up now - signed up at a friend's house earlier; now I just need to get a cheap but decent mic.  My inspiron 6000 doesn't appear to have one.  Pay Dell £699 for a fairly high-end laptop which doesn't even have a mic... what is the world coming to I tells ya? http://www.xten.com/index.php?menu=download

Found on Sipgate site: here

You could also use the SNOM softphone, Firefly (3rd party version) softphone or several others.

You didn't have to wait. I've had a number for almost a year, without broadband, and have been hoping for them to introduce call diversion (eg to foreign mobile) but now it looks like other providers are ahead on this.

Sipgate.

It costs nothing to set up, and there is no monthly fee.

I got slightly mixed up with which part of the post you were asking about.

Apologies - away for a bit

Yes, I've had the Sipgate number for that time, but I haven't seen any hint of call diversion. Other providers seem to be doing this, but I hadn't the slightest intention of suggesting it would be free.

It would be useful for it to be less than incoming roaming charges for a UK mobile, and even better under O2's ITS tariff to Europe of 17p/min.
