I took my wife to the Ideal Home Exhibition at Earl's Court yesterday. (Well one does.... I don't know who was the most bored!)
However I came across a small stand which was promoting a small piece of software allowing any mobile phone to be used on VoIP.
I am not endorsing it in any way, but it seems worth the money at £30?
See what you think,

Not sure, but it may only be for cordless 'phones? Rather than mobile or cellphones.
But still an excellent move. Well spotted.

It seems a bit confusing in the diagram which it is claimed shows how to connect it? It seems to have a USB connector and links to the line, audio in and speaker-out connections of the sound card; but then what? How do you connect it to the cordless phone?

You are right it is for a cordless phone.
Connection is by way of the telephone line in the base unit.

There are similar devices available on ebay such as this one:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=175&item=5179248879&rd=...
or this more expensive one that sends the ring through to the phone itself:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11682&item=5179248899&r...
They look interesting, and I have to say I can see the benefits of having a free second line through eg 1899 using my broadband connection.
Question is, do these devices work with "standard" networks such as 1899? Would I be able to hook one of these between a PC and a cordless phone and use it, to all intents and purposes, like a second landline connection?

I've been using the 1899 VOIP offering from my PC and sometimes the quality is fine but at others there seems to be a delay in "packets" reaching the person at the other end. Has anyone else encountered this?

This is always likely to be a problem technically with limited bandwidth and varying traffic loads. One day we will all I fear face the realisation again that we actually live in an ANALOGUE world!
Sad that really.
