After > 6 < calls, BT have AT LAST confirmed to me that 0300 and 0500 numbers ARE Free! Please do not go spreading the myth that 0300 numbers are free to call
per se. Their call charges depend on the tariff subscribed to.
These numbers can be placed in two groups:
1. "Freephone" numbers: This is a widely used title and applies to 0800, 0808 and 0500 numbers. They are free to call from BT landlines and other landlines, irrespective of tariff. They are also free from BT Payphones.
2. Geographic (01/02) and "UK-wide" (03) numbers: All 03 numbers are charged the same; do not think that because the third and fourth digits are 00 that they are different and perhaps always free to caller. They are charged on the same (or better) terms as geographic numbers, and are free as part of inclusive packages. It stands to reason therefore, that the BT representatives would have to know which calling plan you are on in order to answer the question of cost of calling accurately.
Remember that 03 numbers are all those starting 03; that is 0300, 0303, 0330, 0333, 0343, 0344, 0345, 0370, 0371 and 0372.
