18866 Voip UK Calls Price and Connection Charge??
May 30th, 2005 at 1:01pm

I still find the idea of using Voip for phone calls something of a hassle, even though I have broadband, an ADSL wireless modem and a wireless notebook PC.

However one thing definitely stopping me bothering is 18866 communicating correctly to me what are their Voip call rates are for calling uk numbers??

In the tariffs section of their website for Voip calls it merely states xx pence per minute, which could mean anything.  Also where does one find the 18866 connection price for Voip calls??  If its still 2p per call then clearly the whole thing isn't worth bothering with.

Does anyone else have more information on this than I do?

I have sent a message to 18866 Customer Services but I think there are probably much better chances of it raining ten pound notes from the sky this afternoon than there are of 18866 bothering to reply to my web message to them.

18866 VoIP calls to UK landlines are 1p/call.

I use VoIP Buster which offer many destinations for free.

I use X-lite softphone and have a Sipgate number for incoming calls.  Would it be possible to configure X-lite to use with Voipbuster for outgoing calls?  If so, can anyone explain (in simple terms!) how to do it?

Thanks

It appears that voipbuster is not an open protocol and therefore cannot configured for the x-lite. You can run more than one softphone on your PC, I run x-lite with a sipgate number for incoming calls and 18866 for outgoing. I also run skype. You could run x-lite/sipgate for incoming calls and voipbuster for outgoing.

Or you could run POTS (plain old telephone system) for incoming and voipbuster for outgoing calls.  So long as people call your POTS numbre using voipbuster then the whole thing can still work out for free. Skype seems to be overhyped to me due to the whole thing being a closed community who don't talk to any other Voip phone system users or to POTS.

I personally still find POTS a great deal more robust than any Voip solution.  When Voip is actually cheaper and more robust than POTS I will feel inclined to use it on a more regular basis.
