BT abolishes charge for Caller ID service
Jul 5th, 2005 at 7:07am

As has been mentioned in this thread on MSE, BT now provide caller ID at no extra charge. It is called BT Privacy rather than Caller ID. If you currently pay for it, you will need to register for BT Privacy at Home to get it free.

If you want to register for it you can either do it online at http://bt.com/btprivacy/ ;

or you can dial 0800 916 55 44 and use the automated service.

Also done.  Thanks.  Also downloaded VIOPBUSTER with no problem and using that for outgoing calls.  Better than 1899 software which gave me lots of trouble until they started charging connection fees whence I stopped using it.

I too have registered for the free version of Caller ID, but browsing the MSE Home Phones forum noticed that it is subject to an unusual condition:  you have to make a BT account call at least every billing period.

Make sure you pay your obligatory dues of a fivepennyworth call at least every quarter - It's cheap at this price - BT may hit you for a monthly £1.75 subscription otherwise.

I cannot see how they can do this when it doesn't state it in the terms and conditions.

It does state you have to make "some calls" on BT's network here and here but isn't very clear on how much/many per billing period you have to spend and whether or not you would just get charged the £1.75 for the caller display or get kicked off it and lose it completely if you failed to meet this call criteria.

Has anyone wondered why BT would want you to sign up for the TPS?

Doesn't that mean fewer calls by their telemarketing customers?

Yes - but is also means fewer customers being lured away by their CPS competitors.

Big John said "you can dial 0800 916 55 44 and use the automated service."

Have done it - and it cancels out the paid Caller Display - well they say it does  Grin

Do check your bills!
My mother's and a spare residential line bill of mine appeared this morning. Both quoted the job number and backdated the change to the beginning of the month - only for BT to charge again.

A long hold to 0800 800150 eventually had them both corrected. Sadly not quite quick enough to accept the refund offered in pounds rather than the correct pence.  Cry
Now to wait for the one in my wife's name...

Bet it doesn't apply to ISDN. They still charge for call forwarding even though you have other providers.

I hope the new policy of line rental provided by alternative providers, such as talk talk for £9.99,  will include ISDN, but it probably will not.

Refunds arrived for Ma's and my other bill, together with the wrong charge for my wife's home bill.
Another lonnnnnnnnnnnng wait on 150 (you now have 44 choices, none of which will be helpful) will be necessary.
What must this be costing BT in time?
Surely they can not be expecting us all to accept the errors?  Wink

Hi all, As a newbie I apologise if this has already been covered.
I currently have Caller I.D as part of a bundle (with Call Waiting & a Second Number (whatever it's called).  If I.D (Privacy) is now free, does anyone know if there's a cheaper way for me to get the other 2 features ?
great site
