Scrap the BT 5p minimum charge?
Jul 12th, 2005 at 10:04am

Many people will know that you can phone for an hour in the evening or at weekends for just 5.5p with BT to regular geographic numbers. But do you realise that ANY call going directly - or indirectly - across the BT network is charged at a minimum of five pence. Isn't it time that the minimum charge of 5p was scrapped or drastically reduced?

Have you tried using 18866   see                  www.call18866.co.uk

UK Calls cost just 2p connection from a BT Landline.Nothing else to pay.

Not so.  All my calls use part (at least) of 'the BT network' but I choose who I am going to pay for each.

At the weekends, OneTel, with whom I am signed up for CPS, let me call 01/02 numbers for nothing and, during the week, as BJ says, 18866 let me call 01/02 numbers for 2p per call (not per minute).  BT get nothing in call charges from any of those calls.

In addition to the above, it may be worth noting that BT minimum call charge works out cheaper than other proper landline providers (NTL & Telewest) as NTL charge a connection charge (not minimum call charge) of 5p and Telewest charge a connection charge of 6p.  You then add your pence per minute on top of this connection charge with NTL/Telewest.

For example, a 1 minute daytime call on BT would be 5.5p, NTL would charge 8p & Telewest would charge 9p.  A 5 minute daytime call from BT would cost 15p, the likes of NTL it would be 20p and 21p from a Telewest line.

Also, mobile network have a minimum call charge of around 5p (2p at weekends on o2 and 10p all the time on vodafone payg).

Therefore, as you can see they are not the cheapest but definitely not the most expensive either (Telewest wins that award).
