It will show the Caller Id if there is one (not withheld) or Number withheld if it's off. Short & sweet !!

Number withheld

if it's off.

That would prove whether his/her number is witheld but not whether they are ex-directory. BT still classes them as two seperate things (I think).

If you need to check whether your landline number is ex-directory then try various DQ services like BT's DQ Service, 192.com DQ Service, etc.

Yes bbb_uk I believe you are correct. BT do not consider these as being the same.

The other interesting feature is that BT operate Caller ID Not Withheld as their default but some telcos do not; some other telcos operate Caller ID Withheld as their default, which I believe is more logical and preferable. If you have a CPS arrangement or line rental via another provider this is sometimes therefore the case, that your Caller Id will be withheld by default once you change from BT to another provider. Localtel were one example of of a provider which used to operate Caller ID Withheld as their default.

Ofcom are completely ineffectual

To check further as BBB_Uk mentions call a Directory Enquiry Service.Try the free one on 0800 0192 190.
