Cost of a new BT line.
Aug 25th, 2005 at 5:42pm

Does any one know which phone companies provide line rental (i.e. you have a BT line but a differernt comapany charge for line rental)?

If so also do you know how much they charge for a new line to be installed?

Thanks Ashley

I don't think any of the others now doing line rental (they all buy line rental from BT at a small discount and re-sell it to the subscriber either at a loss or by adding a small profit margin anyway) will actually do the installation - so, if you're not in a cabled area, you're stuck with BT.

BT charge £75 for a 'virgin' installation but nothing for a reconnection.

If you are referring to paying your line rental to someone else instead of currently paying it to BT then this is known as WLR (Wholesale Line Rental) and OneTel and the PostOffice do line rental assuming you are currently paying line rental to BT.

If it is a completely new line and has never had BT before then BT charge £75 (I think) but if the house has had BT in the past sometime then re-connection is free still (I think).

If you don't have a line at all now and don't want to pay BT then you are probably looking at cable like Telewest or NTL.

Which ever company you choose I believe they all charge around the £10 odd mark - give or take 50p or so.  At least with BT you can choose any other provider of your choice like Call18866 and BT can't stop you from using them but other line rental provider can block calls or if they wanted charge a higher fee.  Also, BT have free caller display now as well.
