Have you sent an email challenging Skype on these disgraceful prices.

That is why when I finally get my ATA Voip thingie delivered and installed it will not be utilising the voip telephony services of messrs GoDaddy and sons.

As I just cann't find it on their own Websites , I wonder IS the following TRUE ? :-
1. Orange (not YourPlan) treats call to 0870 number as standard call that qualifies for free minutes.
2. O2 treats a call to 0870 and 0844 as a normal call which qualify for bundled free minutes.
3. Vodafone treats calls to 0870 as normal call and qualify for free minutes as well if you are on ANYTIME or DAYTIME tariffs.

Vodafone PAYG of any flavour charges 0870 and 0845 at 30p peak and 10p off peak and 0800 at 30p peak and 5p off peak.  It is not part of Stop the Clock.

As it is not displayed in their leaflets or on their website and as most customer service staff give the wrong answer it takes a lot of pressure to obtain.  Eventually I was transferred to the Technical department where someone with a brain and without a dishonesty chip fitted was employed.

By way of comparison, Stanaphone, a reliable VOIP provider here in the US that does route to UK NGNs, makes the following charges (per minute):

to UK - 2.5c
to US - 2.6c

So, it is actually cheaper to call a UK (geographic) number than it is to call my next door neighbor. Good stuff.

Now, the cost to UK non-geographic numbers are

to UK (+448, +443, +444, +445) - 28.1c

So to make a simple call to my bank, to the DVLA, or to chat with a friend or relative at university will cost ten times that of a standard UK number.

Again, for comparison purposes, here is a sample of the places that I can call that are cheaper than a UK 0870, 0845 or, for that matter, a UK 0800 number:

Albania mobile - 26.9c
Angola - 20.4c
Australia mobile - 21c
Azerbaijan mobile - 23.4c
Bhutan - 22.4c
Botswana mobile - 17c
Cambodia - 25.5c
Guatemala mobile - 16.1c
India - 20.3c
Iraq (Baghdad) - 23.9c
Kazakhstan mobile - 19.3c
Laos - 10.5c
Madagascar - 26.7c
Reunion - 15.6c
Senegal - 21c
Sudan - 24.6c
Togo - 22.5c
Yemen - 21.1c
Zimbabwe mobile - 22.4c

Perhaps Hertfordshire Constabulary, Ofcom and all the other apologists for NGNs can understand why 0845, 0870 and the whole corrupt NGN system are of little financial use to those of us that live or travel overseas and have to conduct routing business with the United Kingdom.

The point of this comparison is to demonstrate the unsustainable nature of Ofcom's numbering plan and the consumer detriment of these numbers. I don't blame Stanaphone. It is only making these charges to recover its costs in dealing with all this revenue-generating nonsense.

On their latest PAYG then  (SmartPlus) that's no premium during the day and 5p/min premium  off-peak.
(until you go over 3 minutes, anyway).

Whereas on eg. my older SmartStep tarrif (which I'd suspect never drops to the Off-Peak rate  that's a 25p/min premium.

[I notice their Smartplus almost ensures 90p/call  (in daytime)(even with Stop The Clock) whereas Smartstep ensured only 90p/day]

The Post Office Homephone service charges 10p/min during the daytime for calls to 0870! Evening and weekend rates are also quite a way above BT's rates!

Here's a fixed line CPS provider (on 12911) advertising  32.67p/min (inc.VAT) to 0845 & 0870 at all times.
http://www.3utelecom.co.uk

Don't forget to use the CPS override when calling NGNs, if you sign up with that one.

Who were originally naively charging 2p per minute to 0870.

Clearly stung by the huge extent of their losses they are now trying to recoup them from the same customers who caused them.
