University of York
Oct 12th, 2005 at 2:45pm

Hi,

I did a search but couldn't find an existing thread for York.

Basically I'm looking for a geographic number for the accomodation numbers. The 0870 number in question is 08707583XXX - according to the OFCOM list this is allocated to Your Communications, but they don't seem to have an allocation in the York area code (01904).

The telephone system here seems to be seperate to the 'phone system for the rest of the University. The extension number is 71XXXX, whereas admin, etc, is a 4 digit number. To contact an admin department from a room phone, you have to prefix the 4 digit number with 43 - which is also the geographic phone number normally used (01904 43XXXX). The 0190443 allocation is allocated to BT, as is the 0190471 allocation, but attempting the obvious and dialling 0190471XXXX returns number unobtainable.

The service is Dognbone, so if there's anyone who can help me I'd be much obliged Smiley.

Thanks, Chris Northwood.

About a year ago, I mentioned York in passing in a thread on another university that used dognbone:

http://www.saynoto0870.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.cgi?board=news;action=display;num=...

Then I seemed to come to the conclusion that they are a small company operating out of a farm, so would use other companies to carry their calls. The provider of the 0870 and local numbers could be different, or they could use the 0870 to route to a VoIP system with no real numbers.

It's a longer shot, but with these DDI arrangements the first digit is often changed:-
You might try dialling each of
01904710XXX
01904711XXX
01904712XXX
01904713XXX
01904714XXX
01904715XXX
01904716XXX
01904717XXX
01904718XXX
01904719XXX

dropping the first digit of the 4 digit Internal number XXXX.

You may have a few apologieds to make before finding the right one.

Catalyst Management has very little information on its website.

I don't think you'll find it as easy as using the 01904 71 prefix, it will probably be a different system provided by another telco.

Information on York Uni's website is here. News about the university's switch of phone operator is here.

As there are no Your Communications prefixes in York, you could try the following providers:
  • Thus Plc: 01904 85 Change date: 06/2002
  • Torch Communications:
    • 01904 32 Change date: 05/1999
    • 01904 56 Change date: 07/1994
  • NTL:
    • 01904 33 Change date: 05/1995
    • 01904 34 Change date: 05/1995
    • 01904 80 Change date: 01/1998

From posts on this site Liverpool University has two systems (KeyCom and Dog 'n' Bone) with different 0870s. I'm not sure which is which, but the Your Comms 0870 is attached to a Thus geographical, so I suggest you try that first.

Have you had anymore luck with the York Uni numbers? Im still trying to figure out what the 'real' number would be for a halls 0870 number, any help you might be able to give me is appreciated.

Thanx,

You mean the numbers Dave gave you in October? Dog 'n' Bone is only a brand name used for the service. It isn't the name that the numbers will have been allocated under by Ofcom. If you are serious about finding the geo number, please try those numbers Dave suggested!

Ditto jrawle's comments.

Other university accommodation sites that use Dog 'n' Bone have geographical numbers provided by the above communications companies.

Try each prefix with the last four digits of the internal extension number. Let us know what you've tried.

I don't know whether this extra info helps, but my own number at York is 08707585***, where the last two digits match the last two digits of my internal extension number.

It appears that the 0870758 part is constant, but different places have the next number changed.

I haven't tried everything yet, but  I know that 0190485(last 4 digits of my extension) is a valid number, just not mine.

Try the numbers Dave suggested above with the last four digits of your internal extension. I seem to remember this was how it worked at another university.

How do you know? Who's is it? Is it anothers student's room phone?

If 01904 85xxxx gets you through to another student phone, then I suggest that that may well be the prefix for all the halls rooms' phones. It's just that the last four digits of the geographical might not be the same as the extension.  Undecided

I don't know if it's another student number, I just rang it on a mobile while seeing if my phone rang  Grin

What seems interesting to me is that some of the numbers in the York 0870 range also seem to be valid numbers at Lancaster.

That said, I haven't tried Torch Communications yet, and their name seems to ring a bell from some maintenance work that was done a while back.

The Torch prefixes don't work either - again, they appear to be already used for some other telephony system.

Frankly, I don't think that NTL would be providing this service, but I could be wrong.
