Interesting reply from a numpty at Primus
Nov 29th, 2005 at 7:08pm

I could not find the rates for 087X & 084X numbers on Primus so I dropped them an email as follows:

Subject: Charges to 0871, 0844, 0845 & 0870 numbers

Could you please let me know what your per minute & any connection charges are for the number ranges 0871, 0844, 0845 & 0870 on the Home Phone Saver Tarriff as they are not detailed on your website.

Thank you
Regards

A *****

And got this reply:

Quote:
Dear A*******,

The rates to NGN’s are as follows.

0845 numbers

           Eco                  0.85 pence per minute

           Off-peak           1.26 pence per minute

           Peak                3.36 pence per minute

0870 numbers

Eco      1.7 pence per minute

Off-peak           3.36 pence per minute

Peak    6.73 pence per minute

     0844 numbers

                  Eco         0.0085 pence per minute

Off Peak  0.0126 pence per minute

                 Peak       0.0336  pence per minute

     0871 number

                 Eco           0.017 pence per minute

Off Peak    0.0336 pence per minute

                Peak          0.0673 pence per minute

Eco being weekends (Fri midnight- Sun midnight)

Off Peak being evenings (6pm-8am)

Peak being daytime (8am-6pm)

Many Thanks,

Primus Telecommunications

Somehow someone's got their decimal places all wrong on the 0871 & 0844 quote & even if you do correct the decimal places it makes them the same cost as 0870 & 0844 which can hardly be correct.

How is anyone expected to know the real cost of call & how NGNs work when even the carriers own staff don't know? Shocked

Needless to say, I've requested clarification  Wink

I think it's this - on 0871 move the decimal point one place to the right - 0871's are borderline PREMIUM RATE (see OFCOM's comments) so expect this to be a big earner. Unless of course that IS what you would pay as a customer, but moving the decimal point would then show what the CALLER pays....

Just a guess . . .

That cannot be right because 0871 has different charging bands ranging from 6p to 10p a minute.

OFCOM - If you're monitoring this site as much as we suspect, I hope you're reading this thread

Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink Wink

This is just one more example of how most of us can get bamboozled by the overly complicated and overpriced NGNs.
I know this suggestion is commonplace in these circles but why not move revenue sharing to the '09' range where there's greater clarity and consumer protection and charge the 087x/084x at geographic rates! Not only would this provide a fairer system, it would be considerably easier to understand!

PS I'm afraid I can't help with the original post as I'm as confused as the rest of us!!! Embarrassed
