Sorry can't help with your question, but I'm interested in the VOIP number range you mentioned. How do I get one?

Just what exactly does Standard Rate mean ?  Will I (or anyone else) still get it for free from inclusive packages or will it be charged at the 0845 standard rates ??

Here's the answer from Voipfone:

Dear Farci

Thanks for taking the time to contact Voipfone.

>From a standard BT line it costs (inc VAT):

Day         4.89 pence per minute
Evening   2.0 pence per minute
Weekend 1.18 pence per minute

for up to date pricing see:
http://www.downloads.bt.com/pricing/SpecialisedNos.pdf

Kind Regards

BT treats them the same as 01 and 02 numbers, and they are included in my calls package (with Nildram).

The trouble is that people may think they are more expensive to call, at least until some publicity is given to this new number range.

I got mine from VoipCheap.co.uk

The latest BT, Dec, price list says different to this and states that 056 numbers are charged at G21 rate.Which is the rates quoted in Farci posting above.(I note they qualify for F&F discount though.  Huh )

If you dial them from the likes of 1899 they are charged the same as a 01/02 call .

This list of 05 prefixes on BT Price List shows all 056 numbers are g21 and most 055 are aswell.

farci, the prices you quote are BT's non-discounted rates and will apply to subscribers on the Light User Scheme and similar tariffs. They are on the BT Price List here.

From a BT Together (Option 1 at least) landline they are charged as 01/02 numbers. See here for Option 1 info. Note the comment below table 1a:
Quote:
"UK" includes calls to any number range charged at g21 rates and shown as 11 under Categorisation for Customer Options in Section 2 Part 10

No mention of g21 is made within Option 2 or Option 3, so I presume that the Option 1 rates apply to those aswell.  Undecided

For calling 0560 from mobiles, the networks seem rather slow to find the information. 3 say they charge 15p/min, and from O2 it's from inclusive minutes on my contract ...

18866 told me they don't cover these numbers - "Unfortunately you can not call 0560 number using our service", but that seems to be incorrect. 18185's automatic tariff info says it is a free phone call.

Am I missing something here? Wouldn't it be better to promote VoIP providers who offer a 'geographic' number, preferably for free? Sipgate.co.uk do this, last time I checked. Also VoIPcheap.co.uk, although you need to top up by £10 these days.

Are you? Either type of number is available free of charge, and can be called for the same tariffs, including 0p per minute, from a wide range of networks, though there are some 0560 ambiguities to be ironed out (easier by making a short call than actually asking, it seems)

- interesting that a call via 18866 caused an email voicemail message from an IP address, at no cost to receive.

It may be worth also promoting VoIP providers with a wider range of flexible product options, whether free or not. For example, several people are interested in call diversion to int'l mobiles, to subvert roaming charges.
