You should give as much info as possible when posting a request.(Website,Address,Fax No etc etc)

Read http://www.saynoto0870.com/cgi-bin/forum/YaBB.cgi?num=1107463510 before posting requests.

Heres the website: http://www.transportforlondon.gov.uk/buses/contact_home.asp which might help someone crack this one.

This is going to be a good one to solve.
The Kent County Council site http://www.kentpublictransport.info/bus_op.htm ; connects that number with the company London Central, based in Mitcham, Surrey.

A google search points you towards either Stagecoach, who are a subsidary of the Go-Ahead group, or towards http://www.croydononline.org/visiting_croydon/travel_information/ ;
The information on their lists a geo of 020 7222 1234 under the title of London Buses. I think that number is connected with Transport For London.

Another link is http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/london/london/contact/contactindex.php
The number comes up there, but also with a load of geo numbers for the depots.

The Bromley Hospital site gives this info "For further information please contact Transport for London’s Customer Services Department on 0845 300 7000 or email customerservices@tfl-buses.co.uk"

This site also has the number, but under the name of London General. http://www.londongeneral.co.uk/contacts.htm ; But still confirming a tie in with TFL.

There is enough evidence to suggest that if you tried to go via a geo number for the TFL, you would have some luck.

Stagecoach is NOT connected with Go-Ahead group.

So that adds another company to the list!!!!

I think the number ending in 1234 is the best one to use.

That was my mistake associating Stagecoach with Go-Ahead. Too many windows open at one time. Sorry for the confusion.
Had another look to see if addresses were available to narrow the search down to a specific place, however all of these came up. It looks like it could be a central number and dependant on your location at the time of ringing, it switches you to your local company, or TFL take the calls and the grief, and pass it down the line.

Take your pick.

Customer Services
London Buses
172 Buckingham Palace Road
London
SW1W 9TN
Tel: 0845 300 7000
--------------------------------------------------------
London General, 25 Raleigh Gardens, Mitcham, Surrey CR4 3NS. Telephone: 0845 300 7000
--------------------------------------------------------
Customer Services, London Buses, 84 Eccleston Square, London, SW1V 1PX or call 0845 300 7000
---------------------------------------------------------
For any comments or suggestions you may have about Armchair's services, or for any information about the company, please telephone Freephone - 0845 300 7000

Armchair is another name for the list - Their other contact details are
Armchair
Armchair House, Commerce Road
Brentford, London, TW8 8LZ, UK

Telephone:+ 44 (0)20 8568 8227
Fax:          + 44 (0)20 8847 2679
Fax:          + 44 (0)20 8758 1101

e-mail: info@armchair.co.uk
----------------------------------------------------

But the most common contact name is Transport For London.
So I would suggest you try that route.

020 7222 1234 is the old London Transport enquiry number,
originally ABBey 1234,
then 01 222 1234,
then 071 222 1234,
then 0171 222 1234,
then 020 7222 1234.

So clearly a good one to try.

Yes, there was a time when it was cheaper to send a letter (2½d by the only - better than 'first' - class of post), than make a short telephone call.

I certainly do not forget operator calls - as a child I lived in Worthing, which at the time had the dubious distinction of being the largest purely manual telephone exchange left in the country.  You merely picked up the telephone and waited - often several minutes - for the operator to answer.  If you wanted to make an emergency call, it was probably quicker to run out to a telephone box and press the special button for emergency calls, than wait at home for the operator to answer.

I also remember being told which company had the 'phone number "Worthing 1", because they were originally the first company in the town to get a telephone installed.

But enough of my reminiscences ....  Lips Sealed

Or if you want to plan your bus journey online try

Just a quick one to TrevorD's history review.
Even the old phones had letters coinciding with their numbers, as we do today. So the thought is.........
How did they send text messages using those old dial phones  Huh

You couldn't send text messages in Worthing, because the phones didn't have a dial! Cheesy

In fact, yes old dial phones did have letters - but not quite "as we do today".
At least the letter O (and, I believe, also Q) were on the digit 0 (zero), instead of on 6 & 7, respectively, as they are today.
Hence, the old HOLborn exchange in London became 01-405 (not 465), now of course 020-7405 xxxx;
and also the old O or 0 for Operator (before 0 became the STD prefix).

I think there was a period, between the old letter distribution on the dial (with O = 0) and the current (formerly American) letter distribution (with O = 6), when dials had no letters, being purely numeric.

Many of the current exchange or area codes are derived from the old letter distribution on the dials: the first two digits (after the 01) are often derived from the first two letters of the main exchange, with the third digit merely as a 'tie break' to distinguish between exchanges with common first digits.  E.g.:
WOrthing - 01903 (90 = WO on the old letter distribution)
CHichester - 01243 (24 = CH)
HOrsham - 01403 (40 = HO)
EPsom - 01372 (37 = EP)
