Vonage
Jan 17th, 2006 at 8:19pm

Has anyone had any experience with Vonage for VOIP calls? I was swayed by the relatively low cost of the service (£9.99 / month) for 01 and 02 uk calls 24 hours a day. This cost also includes a number of useful features such as caller display, call waiting etc which vitually all providers charge for at some stage.
I recently signed up for their service and have had several problems.
Their website is difficult to understand at the best of times when you're trying to decide which device to order etc. Once that was sorted they then proceded to deliver the wrong device on two occasions.

Returning them isn't easy and you have to pay the carriage cost even when they have made the mistake.

I have now started making calls and find the call quality extremely poor. Whilst I don't expect to have the same quality as with traditional providers, it would be helpful not to have a permanent crackle on the line which makes most calls inaudible. I've tried the usual of moving the 'phone away from electrical sources etc but this makes no difference. I've also used the highest call quality option.

A call to their technical helpline (an 0800 number which diverts to the USA), provides little help other than the usual unplug this, plug this back in etc.

I am reluctant to cancel the service after spending approx £40 so far in connection fees and charges etc.

Any ideas?

£9.99p  month would give you approximately 77 calls a week to 01/02 numbers if you used 1899 .Do you make that many? Also you dont have to pay for them while your away.EG holiday.

Couple this with a free E&W call supplier and this will bring cost down further.

These 01/02 inclusive 24/7 call  packages are only cost effective if you are very heavy user.

I am assuming you still have a BT line.

I still have my BT landline but was hoping to ditch this if the VOIP worked OK as I use NTL for my broadband
