mobile phones abroad
Jan 26th, 2006 at 12:51pm

I have just bought a simcard from united-mobile.com which will enable me to phone from Europe to UK for 39Euros per minute. There is no charge for receiving calls or texts. However the number is 423 a Liechtenstein number and unfortunately none of the cheap call providers that I know of  deal with that country. I think its about 70p per minute to call that number from a UK landlineon BT.I wondered whether any of you have used this service and what your experience has been ?

Try this link
http://niftylist.co.uk/calls/to/liechtenstein/mobile/

You can get it for 7p to mobile from UK landline
I would offer more but I'm busy at the moment

Also worth looking at the niftylist for Liechtenstein landlines - apparently that also works (or worked).

Ratebuster's 4p per minute number - 0844 7353535 - which is supposed to be Liechtenstein landlines also reaches United Mobile/Riiing Liechtenstein mobile phone numbers.  This information came from none other than Ratebuster as their 7p per minute Liechtenstein mobile phone number wasn't working to call these Liechtenstein numbers.

I admit I didn't try it to check it out other than to visit the Ratebuster website and check that nothing had changed on its presentation and rates quoted.

I was assuming that in the long run TalkTalk/CPW would either sell the brand (acquired from Onetel) or whatever but seeing as how CPW didn't previously have a dial through calls business perhaps they might just want to add it to their existing range without letting users know anything has changed.  I suppose they could have changed the underlying call routing systems by now in which case the cheap Liechtenstein deal might no longer apply.

Both Ratebuster and Just Dial seem to have registered offices at Millstream, Maidenhead Road, Windsor, Berkshire SL4 5GD and JustDial say they are part of Telco Global Ltd.  I assume Telco Global Ltd is possibly a wholly owned subsidiary of CarPhoneWarehouse Group these days.

Either way Ratebuster is still cheapest for Liechtenstein calls using conventional PSTN dialup at 7p per minute and only voip cheap at 6p per minute is quoted as being any cheaper.

reggie, unless BT have changed, you may find that they make a similar tariff mistake and charge only 18 or 19p to call this number. You can't count on that lasting though, and there are cheaper options, not all 100% reliable as there is a wide range of cost and quality to FL mobiles via different carriers.

You can make cheaper calls via the SIM and other callback providers, though the tariffs are in some flux at the moment. US 14c or 21c per minute is still possible

For those who have a Vodafone and have it registered for their Passport deal there is an interesting dilemma opening up as to whether something like a United Mobile/Riiing SIM is a better bet for those visiting other countries that are part of Vodafone Passport.

The dilemma is that although receiving a call on a Vodafone will cost you 75p a call on the other hand the uk Vodafone can currently be dialled for 1p per minute with www.discountdial.co.uk ;  On the other hand discountdial's mobile rate is probably an unsustainable promotion that will end at a moment of Finarea's choosing any time soon so at 5p per minute to uk mobile with 18185 versus either 4p or 7p to a Liechtenstein mobile with Ratebuster there is not much difference.

And if you receive a lot of short calls when you are away clearly all those 75ps on Vodafone Passport could really begin to add up.

Nothing to stop you receiving calls on one number, and making them on another ...

Also, several countries local SIMs have pretty cheap rates that could be used in conjunction with a calling card to call home for a few pence a minute, eg Simyo Belgium, yesss Austria, Aldi Germany, or inclusive call bundles on Orange France or Wind Italy - some need to be applied for online though, and/or only by indigenous people, so you may need some help

After an exchange of a few emails with Ratebuster about this, it's gone quiet.

update - Ratebuster tried ringing my phone a few times. One missed call, and one single ring then stop.

It seems they are having the same issues that other companies had around a year ago - the cheapest calls to these numbers are via a carrier that does not always connect.

There are cheaper call possibilities with other SIMs
