VOIP For Second Line
Feb 25th, 2006 at 12:31am

I know that this subject has been covered because I have read on the subject here. However, as I am now wanting to run a second line from my broadband connection via VOIP, can I find the thread where the information was? Can I heck. Anyway, I have got the number registereds on Sipgate with the help of information found here, I now just need to get the correct equipment to be able to set up the line. I want to be able to run it without the need for the PC to be on. I have seen something that I think may do the trick on dabs.com.

http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?quicklinx=3LFS&v=1#infoarea

I was going to email them this question but I noticed on reading their t&c's that they say not to bother, 'cos they only have the info that is on the page! Anyway, I thought I'd ask for any help on here. I have a broadband modem that is powered off the usb port so obviously that is going to need replacing. I would ideally like to buy just one piece of kit and that be future proof as far as installing a home network at some point in the near future. Will this kit suffice? Or is there another piece of equipment that anyone can recommend?

Thanks in advance.

Wal.

Hi Wally, I am sure the admin team here won't mind me suggesting that you take a look at www.voipuser.org which is a non commercial, Voip 'community forum' with lots of specific and impartial info on VOIP technology and providers.

An item that might cover your needs is a Sipura 3000. This was discussed on this site a short while ago. Here is the link to the thread.

Hope this meets your needs.

Thanks for the replies. Just a quick post to let anyone who's interested know that I now have a fax machine working over IP on my broadband connection. It was not as straight forward as I had hoped because the instructions to set everything up are a bit sketchy (could be me, though!) but with a bit of trial and error, I am delighted to say it is now working. Wally,

I'd be interested to know how you've set your "fax over IP" up.  I have a Linksys PAP2 which has two phone line capability.  One of those lines is then split to a standard phone and standard fax machine.  This is one way that we use to send out faxes.

As I said in my previous post, it was a bit 'hit and miss'. The setup is certainly not straight forward, not helped by the fact that I am by no means an expert! I had read that fax may not work over IP because of the codec used so I didn't know whether all my efforts were wasted or not until I had everything in place, ie. cash spent, and I gave it a try. SO glad to say it works. The setup is a Belkin Modem with built in 4 port router. I have an ATA attached to a port on there which is one of these

The only problem that I have is that someone ringing doesn't get a call first time all of the time. I don't know if that is an issue with the router or the ATA?

Anybody have any ideas?
