Another request for an alternative to BT

Hello,

Need a bit of help for reducing BT's high telephone bill.  We're on BT option 1 and these are the salient details from the last bill. 

Service charges: £37.01 (£28.07 for opt1 and £8.94 for calling features#0

Cost of calls: £131.27

    daytime: £33
    eve and w/e: £5
    mobile: £35
    0870: £25
    0845: £9
   plus some other odds and sods (eg international etc).

What I was thinking was to use a service such as 18185 etc for calls.  However, I was wondering whether different providers ought to be used for different types of call?  If so, which ones should we be looking at?

Try 7 steps (click).

But, as your charges for calling mobiles are so high, I'd suggest you use PhoneCheap (0844 462 00 02) at all times instead of 18185 for calling UK mobiles - so that you pay only 2p/minute.

IMHO, £33/quarter for daytime UK 01/02 calls is borderline for considering an all inclusive package instead of the free E&W you'd get just opting for the (subscription-free) Primus Saver Option 2.  I say borderline because, with such packages, you have to pay the subscription even when you're away on holiday or whatever.  However, it's not really the cost of those calls which is relevant, it's the number because, using 1899, each call would cost a flat rate 3p regardless of its duration and that £33 would have paid for an incredible 1100 calls.

£8.94 for calling features?
Which ones? There might be an option (sorry) or two to improve that.

Well, you're being charged too much for the features for a start.

Create your own Calling Features pack.
You decide how many services you want in it. The more you pick, the bigger the discount:
                 Choose 1 service - £1.75 per month (ex VAT)
                 Choose 2 - 4 services - £3.50 per month (ex VAT)
                 Choose 5 service - £5.00 per month (ex VAT)

You have 5 services. Inc the vat it comes to £5.84.   That's £3.10 saving immediately.


It concerns me that the price you have offered for the option 1 is pre vat. Can we assume that you are business, especially from your choice of options, and that all the prices you've displayed are pre vat?

However, as Heinz said, it's the volume of calls that we need to know.
Working on the prices offered.
£33 for land calls, at BT rate of 3p per min = 1100 mins.
1100 mins using Abroadtel dial thru service on 0844 721 0001 = £11
Depending on HOW MANY calls were made, using 1899 at 3p per call should be better.
Even at 1 min per call, you would break even. At 4 mins plus per call you would save even more than if you used Abroadtel (or similar)
Assuming 5 mins per call.
BT = 15p
Abroadtel= 5p
1899 = 3p

Based on the 5 min call.
1100/5=220 calls
BT = £33
Abroadtel = £11
1899 = £6.60
A saving of £26.40 with the figures used.

Caller display is given free with BT Privacy http://www2.bt.com/static/i/btretail/consumer/btprivacy/index.html. So if you dropped that, it would put you in the lower options package of 1-4, thus saving £1.50.

Simply by adding adding their callmobile option at £1.75 monthly, £5.25 quarterly you would save 25% (£8.75) off your mobiles. Another £3.50 saved.

gives you the prices to call individual mobile networks.
The average rate per min across the 7 price bands is 16.6p per min. (Calling 3 really jacks the price up.)
£35 / 0.166 = 211 mins
Using Phonecheap, at 2p per min as previously advised would bring your call charges down to £4.22. Another saving of £30.78
OR
getting a mobile, for MOBILE CALLS ONLY, with a 12 month free line rental contract would get you a phone & 200 mins (400 for the first 3 months).
After the first quarter, using the 400 mins, you would have saved that £35. From there on you use the appropriate dial through of that time to fill the exta 11 mins costing, let's assume it goes up, 44p.
Therefore your monthly mobile bill comes to 44p for 9 months. (Average of 99p per quarter)
A saving of £34.01 on BT. You then kill the contract and start again.

It's difficult to offer anything regarding your 0870 / 0845 calls without having the minutes and times of day.
But 18185 or 1899 (which you would be on for your landline calls) would still help you save.

International calls should be made using the numbers offered on www.niftylist.co.uk.

Your odds and sods works out at £24.27. That's 18.5% of your bill. To help you further it would be beneficial to let us know what these calls are for. Especially if they don't fit into your predefined categories.

£ 3.10 +        Overcharge on services
£ 1.50 +        Lose the caller id
£26.40 +        Using 1899 for landlines
£34.01 =       Using a mobile for mobiles
