EU1Net - £10 mth for 8MB ADSLMax & Unlimited 01/02
Jun 9th, 2006 at 1:12am

Pretty interesting new offer here from www.euro1net.com

This is available on all BT lines on BT exchanges that have ADSL Max broadband available (basically nearly all BT exchanges now) and involves 18 months of up to 8MBp/s ADSL Max Broadband with a 50Gb monthly data allowance and unlimited calls to 01/02 numbers (so long as the calls do not exceed 70 minutes each) at £10 per month.  The only restriction imposed on the 50Gb data allowance in their fair use policy is on excessive P2P use but that's not to say their broadband won't still be painfully slow of course.

The main snag is you have to pay £180 up front for the 18 months plus £30 connection which it seems you still have to pay even if you already have broadband (in return for which they will give you another USB ADSL modem you won't need).  Euro1Net have been going for a while now but that's not to say they couldn't go belly up next month of course.  I do have a NatWest GoldPlus card that covers me against bankruptcy of firms you buy goods from though.

I expect the broadband is bound to be crappily slow and I have also blown money on what looks like an increasingly pointless ATA anyway (given that 01/02 call packages the normal way are now falling to nothing and voipcheap have restricted the number of calls you can make per week) but still some of you may think its worth a go at this price.  I would be a bit worried though about any firm that wants to lock you into its broadband up front for 18 months when you don't know if its going to be crap in advance though.  This does seem to be a significantly better offer though than the one from Plusnet that is launching in July and also available on all uk phone exchanges.  But of course they don't want your cash up front for the next 18 months though.......................

Nice one NGM - but out of interest how does one find out about these upcoming and newly released offers, e.g. the one from Plusnet??  And as for this EU1Net, it seems suspiciously cheap if you ask me...  Huh

www.adslguide.org.uk and www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/summarylist.asp and www.ispreview.co.uk are a good place to start for more information on the lastest ADSL deals whilst for those of you who are complete ADSL knowledge fanatics like me www.samknows.com can also come in handy re the status of what unbundled service providers (if any) are available on your exchange.  I learned originally about www.euro1net.co.uk at www.adslguide.org.uk, although at the time their then offer of £10 per month for unlimited 1MB broadband was thought to be cheap but once again you had to pay up front for one year.

Their website says the following in the About Us section:-

Quote:
Euro1net is the telecoms arm of Advance Data Services (Europe) Ltd which was formed in 2003. Since our inception our company has gone from strength to strength in what has been described by others as a very difficult market.

Based in the South East of England and with co-locations in Docklands and Birmingham, we are proud to offer a Customer Service team who specialise in every aspect of our business and all are based here in the UK

A mixture of views in the reviews about them at www.ispreview.co.uk/review/censura.php?cmd=details&itemid=483 some very positive (although I suppose those could have been written by employees of Euro1Net Undecided).

www.plusnet.co.uk and www.biscit.co.uk are offering similar but less attractive deals on all BT exchanges with both of them heavily restricting the broadband data allowance and the number of minutes of free calls compared to www.euro1net.co.uk

They are obviously a small fast growing company who need the cash up front to invest and continue growing.  So long as they continue to grow and expand the cash up front model works.  The point of concern would be if their rate of customer growth flattened off and they had a cashflow crunch.

But at the end of the day the number of broadband ISPs who have gone completely bust and left customers without service can be counted on the fingers of one hand.  Usually they get taken over by a bigger company.  If it was just an 18 month contract lockin period instead of £210 up front I would be more wholehearted in recommending this company's offer as a fantastic deal.  But as it is I would probably have to suggest that people exercise a fair amount of caution.  But for anyone who doesn't like to dally with Voip for making their calls the potential savings over 18 months are pretty substantial.

Using www.adslguide.org comparison data for speed, reliability and customer service, the top 5 ISPs right now (with little to choose between them - see here) are:

Euro1net

IDNet

KeConnect

NewNet

Zen

Of these only Euro1Net and Zen are listed in the Top Ten ADSL ISPs at www.ispreview.co.uk in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. See Here.

Plusnet now have this on their website - it looks like for £11 line rental you get broadband and line rental, and for £15 per month it includes all landline calls, broadband and line rental...

http://www.plus.net/features/promotions/landline_product_details.shtml

What do you think??

This seems to be the link on the Plusnet site that gives you the proper price comparison details:-

www.plus.net/features/promotions/landline_comparison.shtml

From that you can see that to get unlimited 01/02 calls plus broadband without any specific data cap (but with very aggressive fair use policy that in effect says anyone heavily into P2P stuff etc would be mad to consider Plusnet) is £29.99 per month including Line Rental.  There also doesn't appear to be a migration charge but its unclear if they will ask for money back on this if you don't stay with them for 5 years.

By contrast Euro1Net costs £180 for 18 months for 50Gb montly data cap ADSLMax broadband with unlimited 01/02 calls plus £30 connection plus BT line rental at £11 per month.  So the BT line rental comes to £198 over 18 months plus £210 for the broadband which comes out at £22.67.  Its unclear what happens with Euro1Net at the end of 18 months and whether you can then carry on at £10 per month for calls and broadband plus £11 line rental (so £21 total).  And/or I suppose you would drop off on to any lower priced offering for new customers that might by then be available?

Anyhow Euro1net is a good 20%+ cheaper even if you factor in £8 or so lost interest from the £210  you have to come up with up front for Euro1Net.  The major concern though is obviously what would happen if the Euro1Net went bust, were taken over, tried to change the terms of the service half way through (I think this would give you the right to leave and ask for your money back) or of course just delivered a shoddy slow broadband service with constant disconnects etc.  Although Euro1Net sounds good Plusnet may be better because they don't get your money up front and if you are a migrating customer you can leave at any time without penalty.  Having said that Plusnet have a pretty poor record on imposing strict and unfair rules on their broadband users and in my past experience as a customer of their dialup service the attititude of many of their customer service staff leaves a very great deal to be desired.  The Euro1Net deal sounds good bit it isn't really when you think about all the restriction of paying up front for and being locked in for 18 months.

You could also consider www.biscit.co.uk but its an 18 month contract (although not 18 months money up front) and only a certain number of minutes of calls a month to 01/02 numbers.

For a start, this works out more expensive, but it is for the heavier user.

I use Telewest and Voipstunt and so can speak from experience.

Assuming you are a new customer, Telewest will sign you up to a £30 per month (12 months) deal.
This will get you some TV, a phone with UNLIMITED WEEKEND calls to landlines, and 1mb broadband.
For your 8mb need, they can upgrade your broadband to 10mb for £17.50 first 3 months, & £35 thereafter.
From experience using a newsgroup service, and D.A.P. you do get a 1mb per second download. There is no cap on your download limit. I did 100gb one month, and NO (UN)fair usage policy.

£30 * 12 rental    (£360) +  £17.50 * 3 (£52.50) + £35 * 9 (£315)  / 12  =£727.5
Over the year this would work out to a monthly figure of  £60.63

This gives you the unlimited landline weekend calls. Max call 60 mins then chargeable.
If you subscribe to voipstunt, for   €11.60  (10 Euro + 1.6 tax) for a 4 month period, you get free calls to landlines and several foreign landlines and mobiles. This credit is not lost if you top up before it runs out. This can be used for your weekly calls. If you don't want to talk through the computer, because you're working or heavily downloading, they offer a callback facility using your landline for a 3 euro connection fee. Max call length 60 mins, then they chop you.

£8.12   (11.6 / £0.70)  for 4 months = £ 2.03 per month. + £60.63 = £62.66 monthly.

(edited because I originally put £ instead of € and had to change the maths figures accordingly  04-07-06)

Personally, I have been with Telewest long enough that I could lose some of their services.
So I use them for broadband £35 monthly.
I don't watch TV. So much of the same, and paying £136 per year for a licence is crap.
BT for the phoneline rental ONLY £11 monthly, so as to get incoming and use the callback
Subscribe to 1899 and 18185 for cheaper mobile calls, and use niftylist for countries and mobiles not covered by voipstunt.
Voipstunt for foreign and landline calls.
This works for all my business and personal calls.

Example, just using 18185 for a month reduced a friends business bill from £130 with XLN Telecom to £18.36.

You could, as I have, also sign to a mobile tariff with 12 months free line rental. You have to pay the rental then claim it back. 200 mins + 100 texts per month, doubled for 3 months, to any UK land or mobile.

You have to decide how heavy are you using the phone, net and tv.
If you could provide your best guesses, or some stats, perhaps you can be offered advice more suitable to you.

To stray from the BB issue a little, but wasn't part of your motivation for the ATA to call in from remote eg mobile and access your home provider tariffs? And is this working well enough, or difficult to set up, or not used very much?

Maybe it has become only slightly more redundant so far with various web-based callbacks from Finarea and others - as these still need internet access to use them at the moment.

What I'm hoping is that they will develop a wap trigger for their callback, thus enabling use of one mobile to trigger callback to another mobile or landline. This is possible with some providers but not widespread, a bit clunky in use, and some Finarea tariffs are lower eg UK mob to landlines 5p on Voipcheap ...

But until it happens, don't chuck away the ATA
