Say no to 0871 - companies that have switched
Jun 24th, 2006 at 9:20am

As expected, some companies that use 0870 are starting to switch to 0871. Here are a couple that I've noticed recently:

Leisure Direction
Virgin Atlantic flight information
Virgin Holidays

Has anyone spotted any others?

It amazes me that some companies seem not to understand that using an 0870 or 0871 number is just a shorthand way of announcing "We don't care about customer service".

Or maybe because they don't care about customer service they don't care whether customers know this or not!

I notice that Martin Lewis has had an article published in this month's Moneywise magazine and ends with;

"My final worry is that most companies will simply switch to 0871 status, which can still be expensive and also allows revenue sharing. But at least Ofcom's changes are a smal step in the right direction"

Perhaps this particular thread should be renamed "named & shamed" and updated as we get to hear who has switched numbers and then somehow publicise the fact that we are being ripped off yet again.

Martin Lewis also confirms that 0871 will be under the control of ICSTIS a year and a half away, so how much more revenue are these companies going to generate in the meantime?

The two major cinema chains Cineworld (including ex UGC) and Odeon (ex UCI) have both switched to 0871 in recent months.

The change by Cineworld does not worry me.

My local Cineworld (Eastbourne) has taken to frisking people to ensure they are not smuggling in sweets not purchased from their overpriced sales counter. Asda charge about half what they are. Great copy for my local paper, but distressing for the poor kids that they searched.

However, I personally started to boycott the place because the auditoriums are dirty and smell.

What with the human rights issues, the smell and the rip off phone number, they seem to be inviting people to watch bootleg DVD's rather than endure the modern cinema experience.
