BT Reverse Charge Call Charges
Jul 22nd, 2006 at 9:16am

My daughter has recently been to stay at an adventure camp for a week. During that time she could not take her mobile. She could, however, ring up from the payphone. She reversed the charges and, of course, we accepted them. We have just had the bill! 5 not very long calls = £18.96 +vat. One call of duration 00:00:00 was charged at £1.99! I presume that is the connection charge. I am seriously considering getting my own freephone number for this very occasion, at 2p/min, it's got to be cheaper. Just another example of rip off BT. And they wonder why people are leaving in their droves! Angry

It may well be cheaper to get a freephone number providing she calls from a payphone or a landline.  Freephone numbers from mobiles are charged for and generally cost around 30p/min.

£1.99 will be the connection charge that is charged for regardless of whether you except the reverse call or not.  Was it BT's reverse charge that your daughter rung or 0800reverse? as 0800reverse is a completely separate company that charge BT and then BT charge you.  At this point BT may add the usual amount on so to make a profit just the same as 0800reverse does!

BT's pricelist for calls made via this 0800reverse can be found here.

There is another supplier (call08? - other contributors will know) that charges a fiver a month for 200 / 800 (?) minutes. That might be a consideration for you. Except that your daughter should use a payphone and not a mobile, all of which companies and most tariffs now charge you. Grrr.
I hope that this will help.

Calls to an 0800 number from a BT payphone number cost the receiving company more, you service provide will soon contact you if you start doing lots of minutes from BT payphones.
