Marks & Spencer Card Safe (CPP)
Aug 12th, 2006 at 3:41pm

I have been advised there is no STD coded number to offer.  I have been through to M & S Financial Services in Chester and put in a complaint about the poor image the 0870 arrangement gives the company in respect of most of its financial services.  Apparently this section is run on behalf of M & S by HSBC. I got someone to call cardsafe to phone me and they did so but
M & S say they have to use an 0870 number to contact cardsafe as well!  Has anyone got any knowledge of other contact numbers?

BTW M & S (or HSBC) have been busy taking various landline numbers and 0800 numbers out of service so there are several contact numbers on the general number finding site that are out of date.

Please provide more information. What is the 0870 number? Do you have a definite company name and address? Check the policy booklet/terms and conditions.

Is this a service where you register your card details with them and should they get lost or stolen, you only have to contact them and they will then contact each card issuer on your behalf? I suspect that this is provided by Card Protection Plan (CPP). Can you tell me whether I'm right?

It is a type card protection service run on behalf of M & S and is for any relevant important personal card not just their own ones or credit cards.  The service covers a range of cards apart from credit/debit cards, such as rail cards, driving licences, European Health cards etc.

The details with the original policy have long since changed as I've had the policy for near 20 years.  The office in those days was based in West London, it then moved to Chester and under HSBC is now based in York.  The number given for  enquiries (not emergencies) is 0870 600 3055.  The office address is Card Safe, Holgate Park, York YO26 4GA

That is the address for CPP (look at its website). I don't think that it has any connection to HSBC, although I may be wrong. I searched the CPP site for HSBC and nothing came up. They provide cover to Barclays customers under the name Barclays Cardholder Protection, the thread for which is here. I doubt that HSBC would provide services for rival banks.

I wrote have a CardGuard account which is the HSBC branded one. I wrote and complained and was told that they do not have geographical numbers. Quite obviously they are blatent liars as I found one to the York office on an old credit card statement. This number still works.  Roll Eyes

I believe that the customer services for Marks & Spencer branded accounts can be contacted on 01904 544685. Please let me know if I'm correct. I have used this in the past for enquiries about my HSBC policy, so if it doesn't work, try any of them. Search the database for CPP and some alternatives will come up.  Wink

Details of the management can be found here. I e-mailed Dianne Cheesebrough a while ago, but she didn't reply to me. Neil Hamilton, Group IT Director might be worth a go. E-mail addresses are of the form firstname.lastname@cpp.co.uk  Wink

How interesting - it was M & S who told me that it was run by HSBC who they said bought their M & S Money a couple of years ago and this card safe system comes under that 'money' banner.

I will try that number asap as I have some matters to deal with that are never successfully dealt with by post but are usually well sorted when speaking to someone. Smiley

Thank you for your time and effort.

Information about the sale of Marks & Spencer Money to HSBC can be found here. In the case of Card Safe, HSBC uses CPP to provide the service. This is, presumably, a decision that HSBC made and nothing to do with M&S.

The machinations of financial organisations is fascinating but a diversion from the original frustration.   M & S agree that as their banner is fronting the service it does not do much for their ethos to have disgruntled and frustrated customers and of course, that applies to all  organisations who use and abuse these costly numbers; so rightly, if we as people do not rail against this abuse, companies/individuals/organisations will cotinue to benefit from our apathy.  I am glad this site exists.

I'll give you feedback when I have tested out the number you offered.

Grin Grin  Success!!!!!  I have used  01904 544 685  and got straight through to M & S Card Safe with it.  I spoke with a very pleasant person, no queueing on a line, so maybe it was a quiet time of day.  Thanks.    Smiley
