With GPRS, it's likely to cost a few pence to use WAP directory enquiries. I would never dial directory enquiries from either a landline or a mobile.
VIrtually all phones in use now support GPRS, but some of the budget PAYG tariffs (notably easyMobile) don't provide it.
Has Google SMS been stopped then? It certainly used to work in the UK, using the number 64664 (6GOOG). Perhaps someone with inclusive texts could try it and confirm one way or the other.
