Directory Enqs from a mobile
Sep 5th, 2006 at 9:59pm

Obviously I expect calls to be a bit more expensive from a mobile, but this hurts.
16:35 118390 Other Directory Service talk 0:00:51 0.511p   Pre VAT price using Orange

Should be
118390 Colt Telecom 27p for one enquiry
http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1110195818,21729,
(By the way Martin, the Google SMS is not available yet in UK, according to their site)

Who is the best / cheapest from a mobile? I know about using the free BT wap site, but then you get stung for wap charges.

If you use GPRS (which I think most modern phones support, then you should be OK. If you are using CSD (dial-up) WAP then you are charged by the time the call is on.

With GPRS, it's likely to cost a few pence to use WAP directory enquiries. I would never dial directory enquiries from either a landline or a mobile.

VIrtually all phones in use now support GPRS, but some of the budget PAYG tariffs (notably easyMobile) don't provide it.

Has Google SMS been stopped then? It certainly used to work in the UK, using the number 64664 (6GOOG). Perhaps someone with inclusive texts could try it and confirm one way or the other.

I saw that, but I wondered if it still works if you know the number.

For the heck of it I sent a message asking for a basic translation.
It's been half an hour, with no response.
Let's assume the service is dead.

It's a pity as it used to work fine. Maybe it's the cost of operating a UK shortcode that caused them to stop it.

I'd stored the number in my phone, thinking I could always text it:

taxi.london

or whatever in an emergency. Now I'll have to rely on WAP.

I use 02002220700p08000192190. First number allows you to use freephone numbers, the second is a directory enquires service, couldn't tell you who but it works.

It all depends on your network see http://www.118tracker.com/mobile.shtml

Cheapest from a landline still seems to be the relatively unknown BT 118226 23.5p a call.

Could somebody please check the BT Directory Enquiry wap service on their phone, if they have inclusive charges.
For some reason it now comes up as file format not known / unsupported, but yet was working perfectly well when I last used it 2 weeks ago. Nothing on the BT normal site, or the home page when "Wapping" ( Sounds like an offence occurring on Clapham Common!"

My phone Nokia 6230i on Orange with Pay as you go wap charges on a contract phone.

go to http://wap.bt.com

press continue, see the menu, then you're on

http://wap.thephonebook.com

it does seem a bit intermittent at the moment on the bt domain

I could do some shortened links to the business and residential pages if you like
