Channel 4 - 0845 076 0191
Dec 6th, 2006 at 6:46pm

Does anyone know the belfast number for Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries?  0207 306 8333 still works for now - but it soon will not.

As a result, I contacted them this afternoon to ask which number they were really on.

I pointed out to them that now they are on Sky Digital in Ireland on channel 142 and previously, viewers in Ireland could call them and not watch them - they can now watch them and not call them - at least they won't be able to once the 0207 number ceases.

Does anyone know the number of the Belfat Bureau switchboard or any number at Belfast Bureau?  This may give a clue - but I also pointed out to them that it is now more expensive to call them than it has been for the past two years.

Here is the reply to the e-mail they sent me earlier today.  If anyone can help please get in touch:

-------------------------------------------

Dear James,

0845 numbers are known as 'lo call' numbers and are a fairer alternative to actual local numbers, as they cost no more than 4p per minute from BT lines (mobiles and others vary) from anywhere in the United Kingdom. The Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries number available on our website is the only number available to viewers.

I am afraid that Channel 4 is not available in the Republic of Ireland via satellite. Our licence and broadcast rights agreements restricts our transmission to within the UK area only. Although it is true that some cable operators do supply it - this is via what we classify as 'gratuitous' reception as cable technology is not able to restrict transmission by area in the same way that satellite can. So I am afraid that whilst these restrictions are in place Channel 4 will remain unavailable, sorry.

If you require further information, feel free to email me back or visit http://help.channel4.com/tv.

There's that long since discredited "

" nonsense again.

Elbows and other parts of the anatomy spring to mind.

Got another reply today and it is still not very useful.

-----------------------------------------------------------

Dear James,

Thank you for contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries.

I am sorry to hear that you are unhappy with our previous responses.

You are correct, while Channel 4 is now available on Sky in the Republic of Ireland, some programmes will not be available and will not be broadcast. This is because we do not have a license to broadcast outside of the UK.

We are unable to provide you with an alternative number for Viewer Enquiries. If you need to phone us, you must use the published 0845 telephone number. If you prefer, you can also contact as via email as you have done, or in writing.

If you require further information, feel free to email me back or visit http://help.channel4.com/tv.

Hi.  The 0845 listedin the title is now the only known way to contact Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries.  The old number of 0207 306 8333 now has a message saying that this number is no longer in use, and could you please redial the 0845 number.  It no longer diverts to the Belfast 0289 number.

If anyone knows of an alternative way of contacting Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries, please get in touch.

Thanks.

The main switchboard number is 020 73964444. Will they put you through?

Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries has been 'outsourced'. Story from the Guardian here.

And the winner was 'Gem'. Press release is here. Gem's switchboard number is 028 9022 7777

I found this page which lists Gem's recruitment number as being 028 9092 1717. It answers as such and it has proven to be the breakthrough I was hoping for as it is one of a block of numbers for Gem.

The direct number for Channel 4 Viewer Enquiries is 028 9092 1702.

The technical support helpline for 4 On Demand is 028 9092 1705. Anyone know what the non-geographical number is for this? It says it's 60p/min, so it will be a 090 one. (Of course, if you call the 028 number it won't cost you 60p/min!)

Hmmm, did a quick Google around (and a search on the channel4.com site) but can't find any number for 4 On Demand help. Maybe this number was never publicised, or is only given out once email support has been exhausted (which is all I could find on their site).

Great detective work on finding the other number though Dave Cheesy.

Oh, and it might be worth pointing out that under no circumstances should people tell anyone at Channel 4 that they have found an alternative. As always, use 141 and if asked, say you used the 0845 number. As I assume that Gem owns a large block of geographic numbers, they can easily re-route it if they discover the underlying number has been discovered.

From this I have also found the Play.com number which someone submitted but I deleted because it isn't based in NI. There are also numbers for Expedia and others nearby.
