a very nice man

With Fineara / Betamax and the like, offering so many services now, perhaps it's time to think about getting a dedicated voip connection. As such, I've been thinking about getting an adaptor.
However, a quick look at the marketplace shows quite a few devices, at prices between £30 and a new mortgage. Anyone with enough personal experience of these things able to offer any advice.
The major consideration for me is cost. You can forget most of the bells & whistles. I currently use the callback service offered by most of the companies. This at the moment costs 0.05 euro, about 3p, to make the connection between my homephone and the target. Plus the appropriate call charges, free or otherwise.
Even if I purchased a device costing as little as £30, it would still take 1000 calls before it would pay for itself. Having used pc calling before, I've suffered the echos and buckets of water problems. Has it improved lately? And is it enough to justify the expense of yet another plastic box?
I'm in the position where I will not sacrifice my BT landline, despite the possibility to port my number.
Any thoughts anyone?
