How Safe Is It?
Jan 26th, 2007 at 3:18pm

Hello everyone, I'm a newbie to the forum, but have used the website on a number of occassions.
Please forgive me if I have started a new thread but should have used an old one, or have not used the correct netiquette.

I was just thinking .... recently I looked up an alternative to the 0870 850 5463 number for activating a Halifax credit card.  I found an unverified freephone alternative on here 0800 0856 280.  I was just wondering how easy would it be for someone to set up a spoof number with the intention of getting somebody's credit card details?  The number could be set up to sound like it was from Halifax say, and you would be giving a lot of confidential information.  What do you think?

Always possible but unlikely.

I would suggest you stick to using numbers only on the Verified numbers list for these kinds of institutions if you have such concerns.  The Unverified numbers can be added by anybody on the site and are unchecked so could potentially be used for such scamming.  However on the whole there is no evidence so far that this has happened.

Hi, just thought I'd update you on this.....  In fact I went to the Halifax branch and complained to them about having to phone an 0870 number to activate a card.  I told them I thought they were being cheeky and unless I could activate it in-branch, I wouldn't bother with it at all.  The guy said that they don't have the information for activating credit cards in-branch, but I was welcome to use their telephone.  Which I did.  So happy ending  Smiley

I hope you didn't have to spend any money on petrol or parking though to make this visit and it was just on foot say during your lunch hour from the office?
